I was reading something earlier that mentioned best covers of songs. Now this is obviously completely subjective. There are a few songs that seem to be universally agreed upon that the cover is better than the original, but usually there is room for debate.
The only thing we're not debating: Zeppelin. I'm sorry but no Zeppelin cover is ever better

Wonderwall by Ryan Adams (Oasis cover) - the reason it works is because it brings something new to the song, it puts an original spin on it. Ryan's version is haunting while Oasis' one is more... romantic.
I Love Rock & Roll by Joan Jett (The Arrows cover) - Hell, not a lot of people seem to even be aware this is a cover, they assume it was an original by Joan (and it irritates me that The Runaways movie that was just released implies this too)
A Moment Like This by Leona Lewis (Kelly Clarkson cover) and Run by her too (Snow Patrol cover) and I Will Be (Avril Lavigne cover)... really, I prefer the originals, but Leona brings something different to it, it's a different style with her so while they don't beat the originals, they don't seem like bad imitations and as far as covers go, they're pretty decent.
Hospital Beds by Florence + The Machine (originally by Cold War Kid) - the two versions are just so different...
Against All Odds by The Postal Service (originally by Phil Collins) - they took a pretty cheesy classic ballad and made it more... indie.
I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston (originally by Dolly Parton) - people can say what they will about the song, but it is one of the ultimate power ballads and Whitney's version made it famous and became like, one of the best selling singles ever.
...I'll stop now. o.O
