Where the wind comes from?

We had a wind-thunder-lightening-rain storm this afternoon. Blew down a tall Leland cyprus in our yard. It did not drop quickly, but slowly over a ten minute period worked its way down as the wind beat on it and the saturated ground gave way. The root wad is only about four feet across, obviously too small to hold such a big tree in a persistent wind. So, Lelands aren't the ones to strap yourself to if you ain't going nowhere... They are a hybrid of the Monterey and Nootka Cyprus. They grow really fast, maybe too fast. I planted it in 96 and it was already 70 feet tall.

There is a clump of tulips in the root wad I'll try to save tomorrow after the wind has died. Electricity has been off and on.
