This Week in Film

Nov 24, 2007 12:46

By "This Week in Film," I of course mean "Movies I Watched This Week." I'm excited to say that I've started watching movies again, so I jut felt like commenting a little on each. If you've seen any/all of these, please comment as well. I haven't posted in a while, but I promise I'm making some cool (mostly Bleach) icons, although slowly...
Spoilers ahead?

Blade Runner
Really, really enjoyable! Who would've thought?

Battle Royale
Ohhkay, my friends recced this to me because they know of my serious asian fetish, Kill Bill love, and Japanese-speaking ways. But I must say, it is very hard for me to watch a movie in which so many cute little asians are brutally murdered. I almost cried! My friend said that I should've watched it with a group instead of alone, but...
Anyway, the ending was good, although I was mad that Sawada died because he was DAMN fine. (Why are guys named Sawada always so hot?) Chiaki Kuriyama of Kill Bill fame was really good in it--it hurt to see her die. :( All-in-all, I think I liked it, but I don't know if I could re-watch it.

Match Point
Jonathan Rhys Meyers annoys the crap outta me! I like him in the Tudors because cocky King Henry really seems to fit his character (and there are good sex scenes), but I have no desire to watch him otherwise. He just looks like a jerk who thinks he's all that.
I hate most movies about affair-based relationships. JRM's character is a social-climbing leech who is too dumb to fucking just appreciate his good luck marrying a rich man's daughter and must try to fuck everything up by screwing around with his brother-in-law's ex-fiance. Granted, she is Scarlett Johansson, but STILL. The movie's conclusion is so frustrating, but I gues it makes the point that sometimes bad guys do win. Not every movie can end with a cliche.
Scarlett is breathtaking, as usual.
This was a Woody Allen movie? Who knew. It doesn't really feel like one.

Lost in Translation
Yes, I like to watch movies involving Japanese. ^__^ I wasn't crazy about this movie for similar reasons that I didn't like Match Point. Cheating, first off. Second, the dubious quasi-romance between May and December. Okay forphysically-idealized manga, not okay for Bill Murray's saggy old ass. Third and most importantly, it was totally unrelatable; now one but TWO people in Japan who DON'T like it!? I don't get it...:p Well, that was my shallow interpretation of a movie many people love.
Scarlett is breathtaking, as usual.

Trainspotting
Scottish accents.......ARGH!!! I drool over them, even though they are highly incomprehensible. I admit that I occasionally had to switch on subtitles. Anyway the whole thing hinges on heroin, which I didn't know. (I just pick movies based on name recognition alone. And cult favoritism.) Heroin freaks me out and some of the scenes are really scary, but the movie was really good. I thought it was a good balance of real to surreal, endearing character moments to despicable character moments. Very real-life. There's a lot of memorable scenes, too. The soundtrack is quite good; I'm gonna look for it online. And you get to see Ewan McGregor's penis, so everybody wins!

My favorite moment...
[Begbie tosses a glass over his shoulder, hitting a girl on the head below. She screams, bleeding.]
Begbie: "That lassie got glassed and no cunt leaves here 'til we find out what cunt did it!"
Guy in bar: "Who the fuck are you?!"
Begbie: "AAAAARRRGHHH!!!!!" [Kicks him in the balls.]
