Fallen Away
The world had changed. She could feel it in the air, see it in the darkness that now pervaded her once bright home. The skies were closed, the land of the Elders and Whitelighters completely shut off from those below. She was alone, abandoned by those meant to guide and protect her. And she… she had changed as well.
Six months ago Lena disappeared from the Earth, sank below the Underworld and all the way into Hell in a desperate plan to rescue a friend. In the end she was trapped, forced to take the long route home, crawl out of Hell on her hands and knees. She endured torment and torture, the demons of Hell made sure that she experienced every agony imaginable, that she would never be able to close her eyes at night and not want to scream at what lay behind her lids. She suffered through it all but never gave up, never gave in. She made it back to San Francisco, made it home, desperate to see her family. But it wasn’t really home anymore and there was no one waiting for her there.
Everyone Lena loved was gone. The Kalos Vineyard was dilapidated and empty, Halliwell Manor razed to the ground. Her family had left, escaped ‘up there’ to wait out the impending storm. They thought her dead or unreachable, they left without her, barricaded themselves away in a place she could not visit or reach out to. The fact that the Elders pressured them to leave, that they waited for her as long as they could, was small consolation. She had been raised always to protect the innocent, put others before herself, fight for the greater good, and they had defied all of those things. They left the world to die, overwhelmed by the strongest demons ever unleashed. They left the world to perish and would only return when the demons had grown weak enough to destroy, but by then there would be nothing left to save.
Except that Lena had been left behind.
With Wyatt and Chris gone, she was the most powerful force of good in the world, it would be up to her to face the dark, the fight the demons, to organize the witches and lead the war against evil.
A year ago she would have been honored to have such a destiny, she would have taken up the mantle with pride and strength. But now, she just wasn’t sure she wanted it. She wasn’t the same person she used to be.
Lena tried to remember the feeling of contentment, tried to remember lazy days in the field, picking grapes off of the vine and dreaming about the future. She tried to turn back time and remember the first flutters of love as her hand encircled Dylan’s. She thought of holding on to Chris and Wyatt, the power of their heritage forging unbreakable bonds between them, their magic spinning in the air around them, connected, together, a circle never-ending, unbreakable. But those memories and those feelings were lost to her now, like trying to trap air in the palm of her hand. Even the reasons she had risked Hell and torment were beyond her memory now, days spent perfecting a plan doomed to fail from the very beginning all fallen away.
There was nothing left to Lena except darkness, nothing to live for, nothing to die for, nothing to fight for besides some gathered up morals and beliefs from another life, one last ditch effort to see her family again.
Hell had torn her into so many pieces that she could never be properly put back together, rent her soul and broke her spirit. The lines between good and evil, light and dark, had been blurred together so badly that all Lena could see was the black. But still she would fight, because somewhere deep inside of her she knew that it was the right thing to do, and because maybe if she searched the darkness long enough she would find some piece of herself there.
