According to the advertising Vertere was supposed to be a paradisiacal escape focused on atonement to reach Utopia. If that was what that angel attempted to do, Integral thought his apostles - his Avatars - needed to be purged and improved first before trying to lecture the citizens. As a young ruler herself, she saw the flaws in their fragile grasp of authority. They had the power and were unable to control it. Bluntly said, some were terrible in their offices.

But they were still dangerous and she didn’t underestimate their might.

Therefore, the day when Johnny decided to hold his duel, Integral Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing was present amongst the crowd of curious audience, allies and cheerleaders who celebrated for the pirate’s eventual victory. She had given him her word to be there and she would hold her promise no matter how tired and stressed the knight happened to be.

She hadn’t touched the drinks or any snack that were offered to relieve the wait, nor had she enjoyed the fireworks that set the evening sky alit with a rain of glowing colours and increased merrymaking of the youngest within the crowd. Integral was no there to have fun. She only could relax when her enemies were defeated, not previous to that.

Even in her harsh mindframe that wished for Johnny to focus in a battle not in a show, Integral understood why they were being so impulsive and reckless to take over the square just like that. They had been deprived from nightly celebrations for too long, live in fear at the thought of the monsters outside. To cheer, to drink and eat, to set the fireworks in the perfectly clean atmosphere was a way to tell the Avatars, to world and themselves: “Here we are. We live and love it.”

Pity she wasn’t in a light-hearted, festive spirit to join the rest. Not with anxiety for the lack of news about her world, the disappearance of Cait, the death of that Matt fellow, Mr. Reeve in danger, and Galen’s and Alucard’s dreadful state. Integral had no reason to be in a party.

This was for a promise, her word and her research about the Avatars. She would see one in action in person. This was her chance.

Standing at a side of the magnificently crafted fountain, at the shadows of the right hand of a sorrowful white angel, the knight was smoking her cigar with a serious expression. Her long, blonde hair loose and swirling at the gentle, evening breeze; while her blue eyes remained hidden behind the glare of her spectacles provoked by the intense glow that illuminated the waters of the fountain at night. Integral wore her black suit without a cross or cravat any longer with her first two buttons undone, and two Berettas holstered beneath the layers of her jacket.

She exhaled smoke and remained calm after Robo-Ky’s orders and Johnny’s mocking reply. Her left hand was inside her coat pocket, toying with the healing vial Mathias had provided her for the “hero” in case he was badly wounded. Her eyes moved from the embarrassing declaration directed to the Avatar of Order to seek for a familiar face in the multitude.

Has Megumi attended? wondered Integral. If she could not find her, she would certainly look for that mercenary that Johnny had hired in order to pass him the potion. It would look less suspicious if she delivered it in person. But it appeared, she had waited too long to do that, the circus of before had disoriented her. And now…

...the battle looked just about to start.
