I'm thinking about going back to school again. This time to be an RN. The plan so far had been to work my way up, from EMT, to Paramedic, then to RN, and NP or PA from there. But I think I am going to skip paramedic, because it takes almost as much schooling as RN, and a Paramedic makes half as much money as an RN

*ENGL 101 102 OR pass in proficiency exam
*Algebra or a Math Medicine class OR passing a proficiency exam
*Microbiology
*Chemistry 2 semesters with a lab (BSN, I don't know about ADN, which is what a 2 year college RN is.)
*Anatomy Physiology 2 semesters
*Nutrition or Nutrition in Health Care
*Family Studies Human Development (bullshit class)
*Psych 101 (bullshit class)
All this, and probably more since nursing school administrators are sadists by nature, needs to be completed usually before you can even apply to the actual nursing program.
Once or IF you get in:
Nursing Processes(basically teaches bedside manner)
MedSurgI(learning basic pt care: turning, bathing, passing meds, charting, care plans)
L&D(see mommy squint while misshapen head comes forth, then give little babies shots)
MedSurgII(place IVs, give IV meds, hang IV bags, colostomy bag, and lots of other nasty shit)
Peds(go to local schools to do assessments, give kids shots, see really really sick kids in hospital that are going to die)
Psych(bullshit class, didn't study at all and still passed with a high B, go to psych hospitals and play cards with the veggies and psychos)
Critical Care(wound in a bag, drips for sedation and pain, lots and lots of charting, ventilators, TPN, arterial pressure lines, newly placed chest tubes, butt bags, Basically any orifice and some made on purpose filled with a tube of some kind)
Other than that it depends on if you decide 4 yr BSN(which is actually 5 with all the goddamn requirements) or 2 yr ADN.
In retrospect the 2 yr program is best because the nursing instructors are less psycho, more focused on actual clinical practices, and it only takes 2 or so years to make the same amount as a new grad BSN. Oh and it's hella cheaper.
Nursing is the cattiest profession. They eat their young. But, if you must fulfill your masochistic urges... go for night shift.
