I was going to say hey, I'm on Google Plus now and that's all I use, except I don't post on there either! I am still alive and junk. Not working right now, which is getting a little worrisome because of upcoming doggie ( Read more... )

A dog! This is a marvellous thing and I am very pleased to hear it. And a solid black German shepherd... that is also a most marvellous thing. :)

I trust I don't have to do the whole harping-on-about-genealogy stuff. :) But I really, really recommend you have a quick talk with elfasi, who recently also lumbered himself with a German Shepherd pup, and had some exceedingly interesting lines of enquiry concerning genealogical research and so on and so forth.

I'll be meeting his pup Katie next week, and I have every expectation of falling helplessly head-over-heels in love!

In case anybody's interested, then, at least in the bits of Germany I hang about in, the second vowel of 'Elke' is a very unemphatic schwa, rather as you might pronounce "elker" in the sense of "someone who goes out after elk".

The friend who helped me and akeela get together with mischamute has a nice piece of advice about dog names. She recommends that they should be two syllables (the optimum for getting the dog's attention without being too long), and that one of the vowels should be an "ee" sound (whose high frequencies are prominent to the dog's hearing).

[Edit: Oh, Petra's a lovely name though. ♥ I could totally get behind that.]

I have probably wittered enough. So, PUPPY. I rejoice for you and I want to know all about her when she arrives!

I've actually been talking to Elfasi a bit about his pup already, mostly listening to him scream and pull his hair out over house training issues! I'm probably going with Petra too. Hopefully that means she'll be reliable.
