Harry Potter and Recommended Reading
We went to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last night. I’ll try to keep my thoughts here relatively spoiler-free.
I enjoyed it. I thought they did a better job of keeping the essence of the book than they did in the last film, but I can’t put my finger on exactly how or why. I was pleased to see Bellatrix get more screen time, though I would have liked to have seen more of Snape and Neville (hopefully in the next film(s?)). As always, the movie was visually pleasing, and it’s interesting watching the young actors become more confident and grow into their roles. Evanna Lynch, who plays Luna, is fantastic. Now I have the urge to re-read the last two books in the series.

Speaking of reading, I’ve been trying (and failing) to catch up on some online fiction. I offer you these two recommendations, which are both recent-ish offerings from Fantasy Magazine.

Or, if you’re in the mood for some dead-tree-variety pictures books, I humbly suggest the following:
House of Mystery, Volumes 1 and 2, because Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges are fantastic, and I’m increasing convinced that I will love everything they ever do by default.
League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1910, because Alan Moore is fantastic (and can fly and shoot fire out of his eyes). This series is immensely enjoyable, even when I know I’m missing tons of references since, unlike Mr. Moore, I have not read every book ever (another one of his superpowers).
