Most of my friends know about my obsession with Indianapolis mass transit. I have not hidden this fact. I am also hoping to write my M.A. thesis on the subject, one that deserves considerable attention.
The hard part for many graduate students, so I hear, is organization. It's not necessarily finding the information but organizing and then writing that information down. Organization can also extend to research because without a plan for research you can spend some serious time in a basement on useless, but interesting, primary sources.
Why am I writing this? I remember reading about a man named Alain Corbin. He is a prominent French historian. He writes incredible books about ordinary topics, like smell and sound. In one of his latest books he introduces his work by going back to his research journal. I'm beginning to think that I should be keeping a research journal, detailing my progress and such to keep myself from going crazy and exploring how I am in fact doing research.
That's it for now.
