37. The End, Credits Roll

Mar 31, 2011 19:06

I've decided that I'm going back home. I know I kind of flip-flopped back and forth about it for a while, but I think it's time. Graduating one inmate was enough, and I think you guys have just about had it with me and my boozing and baseball.

Thanks for everything, Barge. Don't ever stop in Boston - you'll wreck the place.

A list of notes and parting gifts Donny left for people )

[Knock knock, Donny. Your dorky next door neighbor wants to say goodbye in person.]

[Donny's at the door, looking surprisingly mellow for a guy who's starting to say goodbye to everyone and everything he's known for over a year.]

Hey. [He's smiling.]

Hey. Figured it seemed kind of stupid saying goodbye over the network when, you know. I'm sitting right over there. [He jabbed a thumb in the direction of his room.]

[He laughed,] Yeah, that would be a little stupid. Come in real quick. [Donny stepped back so Dick could step into his room for a minute, figuring that no matter what kind of goodbye it was going to be, happy or sad or kind of funny, doing it in the hallway was awkward.]

[Hallway conversations are always awkward, so Dick nodded, smiling a little and stepped into the room, pausing a beat before saying what he'd wanted to say.] So, I know I've kind of said all this already, but thanks for everything, seriously. I'm glad Costigan had a guy like you watching his back, someone he could actually rely on and all that without having to worry about you screwing him over, especially considering his track record with having guys like Nygma for a warden. [That was said a little more flippantly then the rest of it to try and alleviate the oh god feelings what are they of the rest of it.]

So, thanks. [And he extended a hand.]

[Donny snorted,] Yeah, what a fucking joke that Nygma guy was. [He was still smiling though, as Donny Donowitz was in a funny mood today. He was a strange mix of sad and overjoyed, which sort of blended together and created this funny, in-between mood that kept Donny from feeling too awkward. He took Dick's hand and pulled him in for a manly hug, complete with a couple hard thumps to the guy's back.]

You're fuckin' welcome, Dick, even if you don't need to thank me. Costigan's been theah for me for as long as we've been stuck in this place togethah. Worrying for the guy is like second-nature. [Not to mention that Donny had loved the guy like a brother.]

[Dick laughed and hugged the guy back, patting him firmly on the back once or twice before pulling back, still grinning and clapping him on the shoulder.] Well don't worry, I'll try to make sure he stays out of trouble.

Yaknow, guy, I have faith in you. [Donny smiled earnestly.] I'd probably had a worse time makin' up my mind to leave if you hadn't shown up and stahted being good for Billy.

[He nodded, and there was something gravely serious about it.] You're a good guy. You might screw up with him once in a while, but that's how it fahkin' goes in this place. Keep takin' care of my friend, alright?

Of course. [The weight of what Donny had said settled comfortably over him for a moment. It meant a lot that he trusted him to be there for his friend - again, especially considering Costigan's history with wardens - and so there was something solemn and sincere in Dick's response.]

He's a good guy. And I'll make sure he gets out of here.
