Over the weekend I began a major purge of my belongings, starting with clothing. My closet and bureau drawers were emptied and several large garbage bags packed and hauled to the Salvation Army. It always feels good to get rid of stuff.
It is of course absolutely impossible for me to drop items off at the thrift store without taking a look around to see what's worth buying, particularly in the area of men's cargo pants, which I adore and pretty much live in nowadays and which, along with overalls and striped socks, are essential to my signature style, which as most of you know tends to vacillate between Utilitarian Trail Dyke and Godspell Cast Member, sometimes incorporating elements of each depending on how long it's been since the last laundry day. I will say in my defense that I needed new black shirts anyway and that I unloaded a lot more than I bought. Here's the breakdown.
Shirts purchased: 5
Pairs of cargo shorts purchased: 1
Pockets on aforementioned shorts: 11
Minutes waited in checkout line: 25
People ahead of me: 3
Average items per person: 5
Percent discount on yellow-ticket items: 50
Yellow-ticket items in my possession: 0
Items the cashier discounted by 50% anyway: 5
Total cost: $10.44
While the long wait (which seemed attributable to cashier slowness rather than any complications) could have been irritating, it was in fact rather pleasant due to 1) aural stimulation provided by the good pop music drifting from the overhead speakers, and 2) visual stimulation provided by the truly riveting ass of the young man in line ahead of me. In all, a satisfying thrift store experience: lots of things gotten rid of, a small number of excellent-condition items purchased at a good price. I got pockets!
