Finding volunteer opportunities.
It wasn't easy to actually get a volunteer position, it is kind of weird that giving yourself away as a worker for free can be difficult to do but it is. Of the three volunteer positions I'm currently in(with a fourth one looking possible in the coming months) two of them are from connections from family and friends and the third I had to wait a few months after applying for it to actually get in.
I initially applied to volunteer at a few university libraries but they don't take volunteers(a bit annoying because that is the kind of library I'd most like to work in), I asked about volunteer work at the city council library, they also don't take volunteers, then I applied at the State Library, the Queensland Art Gallery, GOMA and the museum figuring that one of them would eventually give me a shot at doing some work for free.
After a while of waiting, my mum mentioned that she knew a bunch of school librarians from her time as a teacher and a principal so she lined me up and I started work a few weeks later after working out my hours, my schedule, my role and also getting all my police and suitability checks, workplace health and safety checks and I think a few other things I'm not 100% on.
After that a mate of mine said that they had a toy library at his work and I could possibly start work there if I wanted to. So after a few weeks of paperwork and another security check I ended up being cleared and worked out a schedule and now go in once a week.
I've loved working in all three jobs to be honest but I've found that most of what I've managed to get has been the result of personal connections and networking.
My Day.
I was meant to go out to work and have lunch with my mate James today but didn't because he and his wife somehow managed to get some time together without their kids and went and saw the new Jurassic Park movie so I didn't go in, opting instead to get a haircut and to finish my current run-through of Grim Fandango probably one of the best games ever made.
After that I made dinner, Fish and Chips, and then went over to Archives to catch up with a mate of mine from University who has just finished his five years of training to become a general surgeon and is leaving Brisbane on Sunday to go and be a doctor somewhere else. Sadly aside from the guest of honour I didn't really know anyone there. I talked to some of his friends for a while, they were nice, but the music was loud, I was driving so I didn't drink(I had a light beer at the start of the night) and I was tired so I called an early night sometime around 10PM and drove home.
I'm still waiting patiently for the Legacy tunnel to open. Really really getting sick and tired of waiting for the western freeway to go back to normal again. Going to see if I can ride my bike a bit tomorrow afternoon, probably from my brothers place to Toowong and back.
YouTube Clip of the day.
Eighteen minutes of watching cars blow up and crash. Totally worth it.
