First Amendment

Aug 16, 2010 17:53

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

All of this talk about the mosque at ground zero is so ridiculous. Our country was founded on freedom of religion. It's the first amendment, if that says anything about its importance!! The right to peacefully assemble, regardless of location, exists in this country.

Real estate is expensive in NYC. There's a large Muslim population in NYC. If this spot was suitable to the needs of the community and availability of real estate-- what's wrong with it? There's a huge difference between Muslims (generally a peaceful, charitable religion) and fundamentalist Al-Quieda Islam.

This is no less than a case of snowballing yellow journalism that is making such a huge deal about this.

You know what would be fantastic? How about instead of rebuilding a skyscraper at Ground Zero we make an interfaith center that respects all religions? I understand, it wouldn't bring in the big bucks, but at least it would be representative of the Constitution which news organizations like Fox news love to hide behind when it's convenient for them.
