PGP is a great open source program. (GnuPG actually, but don't split hairs). It has never to the best of my knowledge been cracked. I have no doubt that with weak encryption keys you could crack it, and because computers are doing the trust algorithims, that is a point of weakness.
But I think PGP is important. You should install it -- either the open source or proprietary variety.
I recommend Thunderbird, GnuPG, and enigmail. Google 'em, install 'em, install some keys, and start sending secure mail.
