One huge drawback to getting a "real" job is the schedule. I pretty much work 8-5 M-F. This isn't overly taxing, but it does limit my travels. However, one of the reasons I originally took a position where I work is that I have 26 paid days off per year.
I took 4-5 days off around the holidays to take longer trips to Hueco, but aside from that, I've been either taking weekend trips or making a 3-day weekend into a 4-day weekend at the cost of only one vacation day. Employers like when you take vacation days off in little bursts like this because it's less disruptive, so I haven't had a problem yet getting time off when I want it. I also make sure that I'm not asking for time off around big deadlines and whatnot, but that's just common sense.
I haven't been to Hueco since MLK weekend, but we've been keeping busy. Three weekends ago, Sam and I rented Tele skis and went to Snowbowl just outside of town. I was a little disappointed with the mountain, especially for the money. But I wasn't being adventurous and checking all the areas out since I was out of my element on Teles, and the snow wasn't that great, so I'm not totally knocking the resort.
The weekend after that, Sam and I drove up to Salt Lake City. We stopped at St. George for a day on the way up (and back), since it was the only place in Utah with really good weather for climbing. St. George turned out to be way more fun than I expected, but SLC got me hooked on skiing again. So much though that I'm making it a separate entry.
Moving on.
And last weekend, my lovelies Anna and Rachel traveled to Albuquerque to visit their sister Katie, who relocated there after graduating from Goshen. They were unable to make a trip out to Flag to visit, so I went to them. It was the longest drive I'd ever done alone, and it was one of the few roadtrips where I was traveling during daylight hours, so it was a lot of fun.
I stopped in Gallup, which is kind of a halfway point, and met up with Marie from Pitt/the outdoors club. She's close enough that I think I talked her into visiting here, and it was great to catch up.
In ABQ, I was delightfully surprised to see their spring break agenda packed with outdoorsy things, so we went hiking Saturday afternoon, and then went to the Jemez Springs on Sunday (after waiting out some rain) for a really muddy, somewhat cold hike out to the hot springs. So good.
I'm home this weekend and Sam is still out in Hueco, but it looks to be a much more social weekend than usual.
