Once you've watched enough musicals based on manga, everything seems logical and natural. But for the uninitiated, here are a few things to keep in mind.
There are three types of Tenimyus. First, there are those which follow the manga timeline, following Echizen Ryoma as he gains a regular spot in the Seigaku tennis team, and then the Seigaku team as they participate in various tournaments (see below!). Then there are reruns of some of these musicals, depending on their success. Finally, there are the Dream Lives. The best way to describe these would be to think of them as anime filler. Except they're musical filler, so your filler crack now also has music and dancing. Dream Lives feature cavorting of the actors, team competitions, comedy skits, pirate and pimp cosplay, etc.
Then we have the idea of casts. The first musical opened in 2003, and logically, you can't expect actors to play the roles for that long. Normally, rival teams have only one cast (though Hyotei and Shitenhouji have two, and Fudomine recast some characters, I believe). Seigaku has had 5 casts so far, 3 of which have retired. When a cast retires, they have a graduation ceremony (Grad Myu), which apparently receives its name due to the manga having a school setting but I've also heard of graduation from idol groups so whatever. In these, the actors get teary-eyed and loudly declare their love for the roles, etc.
As a final note, I guess I should mention that, despite these shows being musicals, it is apparently not a requirement in Japan for these actors to be good singers. It is very rare for them to be both good singers, good dancers, to be pretty and also bear a physical similarity to the character. Most of them only fulfilling one of the requirements, sometimes two or three. This doesn't make Tenimyu any less fun and enjoyable, but fair warning! |Dd
