Robin sat on the porch and waited. There wasn't much else to do at this point. Most everyone had already abandoned the house and everything worth keeping was being transported out. Now she was waiting for Darren to return. She really regretted what she had said at this point and it kept running circles in her head. Darren had reactedreally well to everything, at least that's how it seemed. Only the people who stayed with him for long periods of time saw the truth. Binges like this always seemed to lead him to trouble. They had at least died down since the first group. From what she had discovered, there had been a group of around ten people who had banded together, few of them got along. Apparently the constant arguments were the start of the problems. They'd split up since them, none of them remained withDarren, and maybe one or two still kept in contact. She had heard other events had made it worse, brought on the hero complex, but nobody seemed willing to discuss them, least of all Darren.
She heard the sound of a motor and the beat-up car floated down, well less floated and more thudded. The wheels kicked up dirt at the sudden friction before the whole thing shut off and Darren floated through the hood. That always creeped her out, he was like a ghost and she had seen the effects of when he stopped being so ghostly when something was still inside someone else. "Darren, where have you been, we need to talk about what we're going to do next."
"Don't worry, I've already figured it out. We have a huge hospital in this town. Why not use it?"
"What? Darren, it's a gang territory. They take people in and nobody comes out."
"Exactly. Bad guys, and what do our glorious police do? Beat up on people trying to do some good in the world. So let's do something bad. We go in, take it over, open up a clinic and save the goddamn world. How about it?"
"That's crazy Darren, how are you going to manage that?"
"Not me, us, and not just us either. I know you've got some friends who can be persuaded to help. I think that immortal guy you mentioned and that bouncer. I've got some things to take care of but I think I can pull some strings and get us some publicity. Hell, we show we're being oppressed by assholes blowing up our shit and we'll get some government help in no time. What do you say?"
"It's not going to be fast, even if it happens at all. We'll need a few weeks to plan it."
"Fine, in two weeks I'm saving this hell hole with or without your help and I sincerely hope I get your help. Now make sure everyone gets out safe. I'm going to do some high flying but I should be back before nightfall, I expect everyone safe by then." Darren turned away without waiting for her to answer. He floated into his car which started up and then shot into the sky.
She watched him disappear far into the clouds and then looked back at the house. He meant well, but she wondered if he was tempting the world to make his ghosting powers far more appropriate.
