If he was asked later how they went from talking about Sulu's reasons for studying fencing and then for joining Starfleet to leaning against his forgotten consol with Sulu on his knees in front of him, he wouldn't have been able to remember the tipping point.

Great way to write - and shortcut beautifully - that transition, and actually rather true to life (having been once in a similar situation, I wouldn't be able to recall that transition much).

And on a side note, I love your GQMF collection on the right. Very nice ensemble :P
