So I've been doing a lot of writing recently - little bits here and there on a lot of different things, trying to find a flow that works for me pretty regularly. What I've noticed most is that location is a big deal to my writing process. I like my desktop but it's in my bedroom - and I just fail at writing in my bedroom if it is before midnight (and what I produce after midnight is not always up to par).
Thankfully I have my netbook, which I mean seriously, probably the best purchase I've ever made. It's 10.1 inches and the keyboard did take a little time to get used to - though now I have more trouble typing on a larger laptop keyboard than on the little one. But it really is perfect, especially for writing.
Anyway, I've noticed that I write best at a table, a place that I can set up as an actual work station. It kind of gives me the impression that I'm working at a desk without actually being at one. I do have one of those little lap desks but I work so much more efficiently at a real table. So that usually means the dining room table at home.
But what helps even more than not being in my room is not being at my house. Today I went to Starbucks and just got a table and set up my netbook and I've been able to write quite a bit so far. I'm still super easily distracted, but the times when I actually write are longer and more frequent when I'm out of the house than in.
I think I'll probably end up coming back fairly often, especially when November rolls around, since I'm still thinking about doing Nanowrimo. Write or Die has been very helpful today too. Though next time I come I'll be bringing my ipod and headphones, I have not heard a more random assortment of music in a very long time.
