I was able to facilitate two groups today during my practicum... The first one was so-so. It was a drug and alcohol group for people in their first phase of treatment. What made it difficult was that no one was willing to speak, share, etc. And there really wasn't much to do with the group material with no one willing to participate. So I didn't feel like it went the way it should have. The second group went great... It was another drug and alcohol group, except it's for clients in their second phase of treatment (between 43 days and about one year). So they were all full of sharing ability, which eased my mind a bit. I was nervous at first with this one because I knew very little about today's material, yet I'm supposed to be teaching these recovering addicts about it? They've lived it and know it better than anyone, and most of them have been in treatment for quite some time. But they did a great job of making me feel at ease. It helps so much that I already know them from working there at night, and that they knew me. So they kind of went out of their way to make me feel like I did a good job, bless their hearts! :)
Tomorrow is my last day at the shelter for my practicum. In a way, it's sad because I've learned so much while being there during the day (as opposed to working there at night), and I've gotten used to working with the counselors and day staff and interacting with the clients in a different way. But on the other hand, I'm ready to be done with it. Starting next week, I can go to class and instead of going straight to the shelter I can go jogging and catch up on things I've been neglecting since May.
Speaking of work, my hours are going to go back up after July 1st (thank goodness), which is the beginning of a new fiscal year. We're all alotted a certain amount of hours in one fiscal year, which is from July 1st to June 30th. I was eight hours away from my limit. Yikes... that's cutting it real close, but it's good because it means I pretty much worked as many hours as I could. Plus, I'm the only person that's been there this past entire fiscal year. That's actually pretty sad, though. Our turnover rate is absoultely PITIFUL.
My class at OCC is going pretty well... I got an A on my first speech and I'm sure I got an A on the first quiz we had today. Lord knows I need a few As to help me on my GPA, which is not too good right now. I'll also get an A for my practicum, so that'll help, too.
