PALM BAY -A red hen that hitched a ride in the bed of a truck from Yeehaw Junction is back home after being captured -- with help from police -- in the parking lot of a psychiatric clinic.
The chicken clucked its way around the parking lot today after apparently jumping out of the pickup truck of its owner as the woman arrived for an 11 a.m. appointment at Atlantic Psychiatric on Franklin Drive, police said.
“That chicken cameall the way from Yeehaw Junction and stayed in the flatbed of the truckuntil it got to Palm Bay,” said Officer George Santiago of the Palm BayPolice Department.”
The woman got of the truck, saw the hen running around the parking lot and asked around to see if it belonged to anybody, Santiago said.
“That’s when she said, ‘wait-a-minute, that chicken looks like mine,’ ” he said.
Hospital staff members called the police for help in catching the bird. Four women chased the chicken, cornering it eventually in the bushes.
The owner, using flex-cuffs from Santiago, gently tied the chicken up and put it back in the truck for a trip back to Osceola, officials said.
“It was a beautiful bird, fairly big,” said Santiago.
“It’s kind of funny. She just didn’t realize it was in the truck bed. ”
