Hello. You may or may not go to Dreyfoos, may or may not have experienced its halls and idosincrices, but it is crucial that, as a friend of mine, and/or a member of this community, you understand what may soon take place there:
Due to this budget cuts, Dreyfoos School of the Arts, a remarkable magnet arts highschool in West Palm Beach that admits students only if they pass an audition in the areas of dance, music, theater, visual and communications, is continually losing fuding. Each year, the government provides less and less of the funds that it needs to simply stay open. Each year, this public school is more privately funded. This year, the situation is even more dire.
We must raise $600,000 by March to keep 8 arts teachers, and their respective classes, from being cut. This translates into a potential loss of programs like stagecraft, musical theater and graphic design, programs that attract talented students to Dreyfoos, and therefore keep the school functioning and open.
I have been given extraordinay oppurtunities at Dreyfoos. As a communications major, I've worked on one of the top 10 highschool newspapers in the country, used professional film editing machines, and seen a better play than one I saw on broadway, put on by my peers. I don't want to see my school to close because of poor government policy, but it seems that I may.
I know that even if the schoolboard doesn't care about the arts, you do. I ask you to prove it; I ask for your help. If you or anyone you know can donate monetarily to this extremely worthy (tax-deductible) cause, please contact Pat Montesino from the School of the Arts Foundation at (561) 805-6298.
We are also raising awareness in several other ways:
We are asking everyone to write letters at http://www.capwiz.com/artsusa/home/ The zipcode to type in is 33401. Even if you can't give money this is something you can do.
On April 16th, county-wide, there will be a Race for the Arts. If you'd like to sponser me, or would like to run or walk, please e-mail singlewordedpoems@gmail.com
On May 14th, Dreyfoos will feature a huge student, faculty, and alumni showcase. If you're any of those, can perform or give us art to display, or are none those, and just want to give time to ths worthy cause, please contact stagechick001@aol.com.
And most importantly, if you're a student: On Tuesday, February 8th, wear all black, all day. There will be a huge rally in the front of the school, on campus, at 6. The press will be there. From 3 until 6, Dreyfoos bands and speakers will perform. The community can get involved with a giant petition and mural hanging from the fence. GO! tell everyone you know to also go! If you're a graphics kid, make flyers! I'll see you there.
Thank you so much for reading all this, and for helping the School of the Arts in whatever way you can.
