Cherokee Dollars for Darfur - The Big Plan

Apr 20, 2007 16:24

This is one giant note to self that's up so certain LJ friends can see it. Feel free to ignore it if you wish.

We're part of a History Club that is trying to raise money for Darfur. We sold pins in the beginning of the year, and they were successful. Since then, other ideas have come and gone (mostly gone, thanks to our advisors) and nothing has really stuck. Until Now.

With ideas taken from The Mocha Club and Dollars for Darfur, I've come up with a plan. If it's approved, I think it will be a huge success:

Cherokee Dollars for Darfur

Supplies Needed:

300 Green "Month One" buiness-card-sized Membership cards, laminated
200 Blue "Month Two" cards
200 RGB "Summer" cards
200 Red "Month Three" cards
500 Printed Paper Hands

[Ask Kinko's to sponsor this, print non-color hands at Cherokee]

15 Donation Cans (decorated coffee cans, or themed cans)
2500 "Cherokee DFD" Flyers [Print for free at Cherokee]
10-15 "Cherokee DFD" T-shirts, handmade [$3 a person, for the sellers]
10-15 Expense Logs
Stamp and Inkpad [$5 total at Wal-Mart, just to verify card's authenticity]

Idea:

Cherokee will have a Dollars for Darfur Cardholder Club. A first month's card will be avaliable for $5, each month's renewal is $2. Special Summer cards also sold. The Cardholder will be entitled to benefits such as discounts from the following businesses [must call and ask this weekend]:

Montegnero's
Pietro's
DiLisi's
Leo's Famous Yum-Yums
The Big Chill
Panache
Salon Illusion
etc.

Procedure, after idea is approved [I feel like I'm writing a Lab Report]:
1. Hold a general informative meeting, draw 15-20 students willing to help, explain everything and divide into 13 teams to cover the homeroom collections. Assign people to patrol at lunch. Plan announcements and commercials to be aired, and discuss other ways to raise awareness.

2. Sell Green "Month One" cards for $5, after program is started go around monthly and "renew" cards for $2. Summer Cards sell for $5 to members, $10 to non-members and are valid for June/July/August.

3. Offer paper hands for 'any donation amount', ask for a quarter or more. Let students sign hand, put it up on a wall near the office.

4. Place extra cans in North and South cafeterias

5. Return cans to Mrs. D after each day, keep a weekly total log, send money in at end of each month to Dollars for Darfur.

How many of us go to Rita's, Diane's, Friendly's, Montegnero's, The Big Chill or DiLisi's at least once a week? I know I go to Rita's for Soft-serve more than I probably should. A gelati, ice cream, or slice of pizza and a drink can easily cost $5, with tax and tip. In Darfur, where medical help is sparse and refugee camps are overcrowded and harboring disease, $5 buys life-saving Malaria medication. $15 would build shelter for an entire family, and $7 (the total cost of a M1 card and a renewal) would buy a mosquito net to protect against the bugs and diseases they carry.

Other Various Ideas:
My friend Arielle is President of "Women With a Cause" at East. She wants to collaborate, perhaps start a program at her school, too. One idea tossed around: A tournament (badminton, volleyball, wiffle-ball, etc.) between the two schools. East kicks our butts in Tennis all the time, we own them in Baseball. We need a Spring Sport tiebreaker!

I do hope our plan gets approved. I'm willing to take it up with the Board of Education if it's knocked down by CHS.
