"Oh, Kristopher! Come downstairs, darling!"
Kristopher lifted his head from his guitar. Not that he really needed to pay attention to the strings for this song (he'd only had the same songs for four years). His mother was calling him from downstairs, which was really strange, because Mother tended to make a big fanfare before she arrived, with flashing lights or echoing music appearing long before she entered the tower.
"Uh, I'm coming!" He put his guitar back in the case before heading to his landing. As he descended, he looked around the overly familiar round room.
Kris blinked. There was a thing in the center of the room. It was... huge to say the least, taller and slightly broader then Kris himself was, and it was covered in this white sheet thing.
"Uh, Mother?" he called out, still facing the whatever it was. It was new, and Forest Lord knew that that was a rarity in Kris' life, but Mother had told him so many bad things about the Outside...
"Oh, Kristopher!" Mother swept in, throwing her arms around him and kissing his cheeks.
"Hello, Mother." he said holding her close. It always felt good to have her close like this.
"Happy birthday, Kristopher!" She pulled away, smoothing his bangs away from his face. "How do you like your present?" Kris turned to look at the thing again.
It was definitely the largest birthday present he'd ever gotten. But he'd asked her for some new books about Africa and some sheet music.
"It's great, mother. But, uh, what is it?" Mother scoffed before moving to the side of the thing.
"Tada!" Mother made a grand sweeping gesture as she pulled the sheet off of the-
"It's a mirror!"
"Well of course it's a mirror, darling! Are you going blind already?" She laughed before flouncing over to draw him closer to the mirror. " I figured that this might finally be big enough that you can finally do somehow about that rat's nest you call hair!" She ruffled it playfully while Kris scowled.
"But that's not all! This is a very special mirror. See here?" Mother drew her hand around the outside if the frame, over some strange markings carved into the wood. "These ruins are very important. Watch."
She took them both back a step. Mother straightened her back an cleared her throat before saying, "Spirit of the mirror, I command thee!"
"Oh Gods above, you're gonna be one of those aren't you?"
A man slowly fades into view on the mirror's surface. That was... really creepy, 'cause Kris can totally see himself and Mother. Through. The. Guy! The guy is scowling at Mother with his arms crossed.
It was without a doubt the best birthday present ever.
Kris gaped. "This is- Mother, what...?" she laughs slightly and Kris scowls too. It's the first person he's ever seen, ok, he's totally allowed to be freaked that there is a person in his mirror!
Mother went to the side of the mirror, stroking along the frame. The guy turned his head to follow her and his face turned from scowling to Back The Hell Off.
"This mirror, Kristopher," Mother went on, "is very special." She ignored the man as he snorted. "This mirror will show you anything you want. In the entire world." She smiled as Kris' mouth fell open.
"Do enjoy your present, darling. Now I have to run, so much to do, kings to meet, you know how it is." Kris nodded even though he really didn't, gosh his life was so dull.
After Mother had left, floating down from the balcony as per usual, Kris turned back to the mirror, running his hand through his hair. The... whatever he was, was glaring steadily down at Kris.
Kri tries to remember what his etiquette book said about meeting people. "So, um, how do you-"
"Yeah, screw this." the man said and immediately faded from view, leaving Kris staring at his reflection.
"Right." Kris ran his hand through his hair again. "Ok then."
Kris rubbed his hands together, looking around to find the easiest way to get a six foot mirror into his second level bedroom. Thank goodness he'd gotten good at handling his pulley system.
After two hours of finagling the huge thing into his room and shoving his bookcases and dresser around to clear up space, Kris had finally managed to get enough space to hang the thing on his wall. Kris paused to sit on his bed, admiring his handy work before leaping at his bookshelf.
Kris returned to his bed clutching seven of his biggest volumes, the ones that contains stories from kingdoms all over the world. He sat on the bed, turning to face the mirror, hanging near his door on the only flat wall on his room.
He saw this mess of a thirteen year old staring back at him. Mother always said that-
No. Not today. Kris shook his head quickly and grabbed a book. He turned to a random page and scanned through it, picking out place names. Places he'd only ever dreamed of.
Not anymore. "Ok, Mirror, please show me-"
