By the time they reached their destination they were itching for a good job. They needed to refuel and in return for all the massages Tyn had given Jairdan to work the kinks and aches from his back she had been promised fresh strawberries which were quite expensive. So you could understand their disappointment and anger at what they discovered.
There were more guards than they had been expecting and then when they had finally broken through the last hidden passageway they were met with an empty room, and there had been no question as to whether they were in the right place their information specified. They knew they were.
"Well that's a bit rude." Jairdan humphed. "We go through so much and miss sleep for two days only to get here and find it's not even...well, here!"
"Could be a trap." Tyn warned, tense and prepared for the slightest sound to indicate guards or worse, Enforcers, were about to capture them. "It could still be here somewhere...hidden with higher technology than we're used to."
There was a sound and before Tyn could blink Jairdan had pulled them both back through the other entrance, closing the passage door soundlessly behind them and they were off at a silent run, giving up.
"What can we do now?" Tyn asked. It wasn’t often they failed. They needed a job on that world and fast, they hated being on a port for very long and against their better judgment they were on a world where they were quite well known.
“Dance a little jig?” Jairdan suggested. They sat down on a low wall outside a shopping arcade and watched the townspeople walk by without a care in the world.
“I’m not going to busk, Jairdan.” Tyn replied dryly.
“I could go woo some rich girl, be her escort for a week? Then we’d have money.” Jairdan suggested next.
“You’ll do no such thing.” Tyn nudged him in the ribs. “We could call Lana and ask for her to research a job on this planet for us? She’d be able to find something…”
“Let’s do this by ourselves.” Ever since Melantha had helped Tyn leave Jairdan’s side he had never felt the same for their friend and preferred to keep away from her, even thought it was almost a year and a half ago now. “We’ll find something.”
They say in silence for a while, enjoying the sun while they thought, feeling a little unreal as they almost blended in with the everyday people of that world.
“Do you want to head back to Shaelt?” Tyn asked after a while. “I think we should get some sleep while we can…”
“Mmm, good idea.” Jairdan rose and offered his hand to Tyn who took it hesitantly.
“What?” she asked as they began to walk slowly back to their ship, hand in hand. It was rare they acted like a couple out in the open.
“Just blending in.” Jairdan smiled at her and squeezed her hand.
