001. Fast - December/January - Rambles & Snippets - Fiction[NET]

It was a hard move, one thought almost impossible, but when it became the only option left there wasn’t much choice.
Tararyn and Makina, fast friends since high school had taken the plunge and moved to England. For their kind it wasn’t easy where they were born - Australia - and so they’d decided to move to where there seemed to be a higher percentage. Here must have been something in the water.

There was a small hidden place called Diagon Alley tucked away in the middle of London where they had decided to make their home. Through Internet contacts they had found a small store available with cheaper than usual rent and came with a small room above it. Some couldn’t imagine anything bleaker, but to the two girls they couldn’t imagine anything more thrilling. They were finally free, and in the middle of somewhere they would finally feel welcome, completely free of Muggles and even better - everyone they had ever known. No matter what was thrown their way, they knew they could handle it.

They arrived late on a Sunday afternoon and were greeted by a dusty old couple of rooms stacked high with boxes which had arrived before them (they’d sent them ahead so they couldn’t back out of the move at the last minute) and nothing they could struggle by with - not even a mat to sleep on. It was also cold - something they weren’t used to, coming from Australia and all, and then Tararyn put up the challenge.

“You know… we should just unpack everything and be ready to open store tomorrow.” She mused as they shifted boxes into the rooms they belonged. “It would mean cleaning up a lot more… but it’d be fun, don’t you think? It’d be right to open at the start of the week… and if we don’t open tomorrow we’d have a whole week to wait…”

“This is one thing you’re just going to whine and be stubborn about, isn’t it?” Makina asked, someone who’d feel quite okay about opening on a Wednesday. “Fine, but you’re cleaning the outside of the store.”

“It’ll shine!” Tararyn promised, already running out the front door with a rag in hand and ran smack-bang into someone right outside their store.

After a flurry of apologies and once Tararyn was back on her feet once more they were all introduced.

“We were coming to welcome you to the fair street.” One of them grinned, George was his name? “What accent is that, Australian?”

“Are we that easy?” Makina grinned, liking these two immediately.

“It is quite unique.” The other, Fred, said apologetically. “So why are you two working so late?”

“She wants to open tomorrow.” Makina jerked a thumb towards Tararyn who began cleaning the windows without another word.

“How wonderful, it’s like she’s on command or something.” Fred chuckled and pulled his wand from his pocket. With a wave, the outside of the store gleamed.

“Wow. You’ll have to teach me that one.” Tararyn blushed.
