She wondered how they could all dress like that while they witnessed what was going on around them. They would stop during their smoke or coffee breaks and watch, silently, as yet another one who used to be just like them was dragged away, kicking and screaming by Enforcers. All for answering the question of a passer-by if that stranger just happened to be one of them.
Sky Pirates couldn't be that bad, could they? Sammy pondered it as she turned away and walked into the tall building, dressed in her dark blue and black clothes. She couldn't see how anyone could dress so nice and colourful, not with what was constantly going on around them. Didn't they care? How could they be happy with this going on around them? Everyone knew at least one person who had been taken away for consorting with criminals and yet no one thought anything about it. As soon as one was said to have had anything to do with one they were immediately black listed and no one wanted anything to do with them anymore, even if they had once been a mother, a brother, or a lover. It was preposterous.
"Absolutely mental." Ebony was muttering under her breath as Sammy walked into the office. Her mind was elsewhere, fingers fluttering through files as she murmured under her breath. "If they're not careful - … another one gone and everyone either looks the other way or stares as if they're at the zoo. Inhuman."
"Morning Eb'." Sammy greeted, a little curious as to what her co-worker was thinking about. "Have a good weekend?"
"Not really." Ebony answered truthfully, but smiled. "How was yours?"
"Another one's been taken away." Sammy replied, gesturing to the window and watched as her friend's expression darkened. "Sad, isn't it?"
"Apparently not, if we want to keep our jobs." Ebony looked away. "Did you get those reports done yesterday?"
"They're in your in-tray." Sammy stayed at the window and looked at the now dispersing crowd. It was pretty stupid to talk of sky pirates inside an Enforcer building, but she felt that Ebony shared the same thoughts as she did and not too many others did…
"I was thinking of going to that burger place down the road for lunch." Ebony said, "Would you like to come?"
They sat in the far corner of the small food joint and behind a small wall of menus and without further provoking, Ebony started first.
"I don't agree with what they do either." She started, quietly. “But you have to be more careful about what you say out loud! You wouldn’t believe how many reports about you have been fluttering around - I’ve been told to monitor you!”
“…You get straight to the point.” Sammy commented dryly. “So… you…?”
“I hate it as much as you do. Not much that can be done - without moving to another planet system… or taking a drastic job change. …For your own safety, watch what you say…”
