The worn cloth she wore was new - or at least as new as they ever found. It was scratchy unlike her old clothes which were well worn in and she disliked it quite a lot. If her old hadn't been ripped to shreds in effort to catch one of the young ones from a fall to their deaths she would have changed back into the comfortable threads - but she couldn't, so she cursed quietly to herself and disappeared off early to the shore for a swim while her new clothes soaked in water in the sun - hopefully making them softer.
The water was clear and still and she waded in as slowly as she could as to not disturb it. Although her people weren't ones for water - more suited to the trees and climbing - they had thin slits beneath their collarbones which enabled them to breath underwater. Generations before them had perhaps thrived on seafood before they became allergic, perhaps, because it was told that there once had been a day when they had feasted on nothing else but fish and coral from the sea which surrounded them, and that's how they came to the island - swimming over from islands halfway around the world away. They wouldn't have been able to do that if they couldn't breathe underwater now, could they?
She looked around at the colours - more than she could name, sparkled out from below the depths as the sunlight filtered down and caught on. It looked pretty, but that was all. The smell was horrid and the taste was disgusting so even if they weren't allergic, Kiliy was sure she wouldn't ever eat seafood anyway. She much preferred hen, from the scrub birds which scratched around in the undergrowth. It was pretty though - even stone fish, however deadly. She was just thinking about the other deadly things she had be to mindful of when something grabbed her ankle, making her shriek under the water and Kiliy turned around wildly only to see Tothis grinning at her despite the fact she had kicked him hard in the chest to free herself.
"What're you doing here?" she signed to him, letting the anger on her face add meaning. "Did you follow me again?"
"I'm sorry." he signed back simply, meaning last night. He beckoned, and then sighed and signed "Come on," and with that he swum off back to the shore, leaving Kiliy annoyed for only a moment before she followed him. She always did. He was the son of Doran, one of the elders and quite often called their leader, if they had such a thing. Doran was the most important member of their group and he still would have been even if he wasn't the greatest healer they had. As a child Kiliy had been in awe of him, and also of Tothis who had that same shine to him, even as a boy - only a few years older than Kiliy herself - the same charisma, the same wonder. They all knew that although another boy in their family, Marcus, would become the next healer it would be Tothis who would be their next leader. There was no one else who anyone could even remotely suggest. Tothis was it.
Kiliy went to fish out her wet clothes but stopped as Tothis handed her some of his own - dry and soft to the touch. He knew her too well.
"Thanks." she replied numbly, and sat when he offered her to after he had pulled on his own dry clothes.
"You're beautiful, you know." he looked out at the sea before them when he said it, knowing she hated him seeing her blush and ran a hand through his short deadlocks. They'd need another cut soon, almost down to his chin, and she touched her own shortly cropped hair with the thought. He'd cut hers back for her only last night, just before their argument.
Kiliy too gazed out over the sea and breathed in the ocean breeze deeply to clear her airways of water before she stretched out and up, her back clicking before she curled her knees up against her chest, wrapped her long arms around them, and then rested her head on her folded hands. She looked at him in silence until he shrugged and smiled a little at her.
“I can’t do this without you, Kill.” He said simply. “…I shouldn’t have told you off for what you said to the young ones. I thought they were scared enough without you… saying what you did. But you were right. What they did was dangerous. They need to be scared more, so they don’t do it again.”
She nodded a little, but shrugged. “I shouldn’t have hit Nill.” She admitted.
“He wasn’t listening to you.” Tothis shrugged, but they both knew he wouldn’t have ever done that. Then again, no one would have ever ignored him either.
They sat for a while in silence, Tothis resting his head against Kiliy’s after a while until she finally nudged him and got to her feet.
“We better get back.” She murmured softly, but he shook his head.
“Sit.” He commanded softly, opening his arms up to her. It only took a moment before she surrendered, sitting in his lap and leaning against his chest as he kissed her forehead and locked his arms around her.
“Don’t leave me.” He murmured, and it took her a moment to realise that he didn’t mean ‘now’, he meant as in ‘forever’.
“I won’t.” she soothed, but her voice was too blank and he hugged her tighter.
“You’re going to-”
“I can’t.” she cut in simply. “…Even if I wanted to… I’m hopelessly dependant on you, Toth. …Sometimes… I don’t like the attention that… comes with being with you… but I can’t leave.”
“How?” he asked, his voice low.
“I… can’t do anything. …I can’t hunt, I can’t heal…”
“You can sense when danger is coming. That’s the most important gift any of us have.” He reminded, but she shook her head.
“I don’t save or help the family every day. …Everyone else does. …I don’t have any patience for the young ones and I find questions with everything the elders ask of us or tell us. …I-”
“Do you love me?” he cut in, and she was halted by the stupid question. Of course she did, even if she wasn’t worthy. She nodded.
“Then that’s what you do every day. You give me reason to get up in the morning.” He kissed her softly and she leaned into him, pressing him down onto his back onto the sand.
They broke apart after a short while and Tothis cupped her chin in his large hand, brushing her cheek with his thumb as he smiled up at her. “…Want to get back now, I suppose?” he asked, and then tilted his head at her in question when she shook her head, replying ‘no’.
“Not done with you yet.” She smiled softly, and although for a moment Tothis was thinking of something else, she simply lay her head down on his chest, wound her fingers in his hair and fell asleep after dotting kisses at his throat.
