i'm pulling for obama. i really am. i just find myself cautiously unenthusiastic about the race between he and hillary. i wonder where some people expect to end up if and when either one of them gets elected. call me a pessimist but i'm not sure how much this country is going to change come november. barack's ambition is admirable, hillary's drive is unquestionable, and undoubtedly either one of them will do a better job than gwb. what concerns me is that i think some people are caught up in the idea of a black man or a female becoming president. it seems that both of them are being portrayed as messiahs coming to sheppard us to the land of freedom, justice and equality.
this is still america people. as well intentioned as they may be, barack and hillary will still be operating under a system of government that prevents any one person from making wholesale changes. as much as we vilify gwb he didn't do any of this alone. the system is flawed and in order to correct that we can't just rely on one person to make everything better.
my fear lies in what will happen when people wake up on november 5. they'll realize that they're still poor, their loved ones are still dying in iraq, they still live in a FEMA trailer, our families are still in shambles, education is still in crisis, and they'll wait. they'll wait for president obama or president clinton to fix all these problems that we've blamed on bush to go away. i fear that america will become disillusioned. i fear that we're pouring all of our faith into these two people whose hands will be tied in many ways. i fear that people will believe come election day that the fight is over.
but my hope is that instead we'll wake up on that day and realize it's just beginning...
