Sorry man I voted no. Too much sun/heat in summer leaves Karen a sad-sac-of-sweat-mung-karen, to which night-time blackness is my only relief. Anyway I didn't expect that after three consequentive referendums resulting in a No-vote, the majority would suddenly change their minds.
What time is the average daily temperature peak in summer? 2? 3? 4pm?
I finish work and leave the air-conditioned office at around 5:30pm each day. In daylight savings, 5:30pm is nearer to the peak temperature of the day. Without daylight savings, there's been an extra hour for some of the heat of the day to dissipate. Hot, sure, but not as hot.
i guess i just feel as though it's a shame to lose time where you can potentially do things that you need sunlight for - go for a walk or socialise outside with friends for example. i try to pack as much into my day as i can, so it disappoints me that i won't get those daylight hours to do with as i please.
but michelle had a good idea - working from 8am-4pm in summer to make the most of the daylight hours regardless of everyone else's schedule. i like the idea but i don't know if i'll be able to stick to getting up extra early...
If in summer, you worked from 8am - 4pm and got out of bed accordingly then you'd be creating your own daylight savings. If you can't stick to getting up that early, then how do you do it during daylight savings? Personally I treasure that extra hour in bed. ^_^
well yeah, that's the point - so we get that extra hour of sunlight when we're not at work.
i think because everything and everyone shifts during daylight savings it makes it a little more difficult. if i were going to try to get to work every day at 8am (including an hour of commuting, which is something i do because i don't like to drive all the time) it would mean getting up earlier, which would mean getting to bed earlier in order to have a full eight hours. i think this would be heard - it would mean being in bed by 9:30pm and i don't know if i could do that - because i probably wouldn't be tired and i would have other things i would want to do with my day/night... i dunno - i think i might try it - but it would mean being out of whack with everyone else, and part of the idea behind daylight savings is having that extra hour to hang out with your friends and do fun things and be active while it's still nice and light outside...
In daylight savings, you effectively do have to get up an hour earlier, and also go to bed an hour earlier. In daylight savings, you are effectively going to bed at 9:30pm. So why can't you do that as per usual, each summer?
I can understand the part about being out of whack with everyone else, but not the part about the times that you personally get to bed/get out of bed.
So, the only problem here is that if you want to preserve your own "daylight savings" time-usage in summer then you'll be out of whack with everyone else? I can see your point here.
That extra hour of sun though - is the reason I voted no,... because usually in summer I will wait until the sun has gone down, to go out.
yeah i get that i would be doing that during daylight savings anyway - but so would everyone else. so yeah, my point is that it would put me out of whack with the rest of the world. when you've only got a certain amount of time to do the things you want, an hour can make quite a difference. like, for example if you're doing something like socialising or you're at a gig or something like that it wouldn't be cool (to me) to have to leave early so i could go home to bed to get my eight hours. anyway, that's my problem now! : )
you wait til it's night time to go out? what about picnics with friends? what about bbqs and enjoying long sunsets with a cold beer and good company? those are some of the things i'm going to miss. i'm not saying we won't be able to enjoy them anymore - but we won't be able to enjoy them for quite as long.
Picnics....I don't go to heaps of picnics... maybe 3 in the past year? They were all around 2-3pm anyway, so daylight savings didn't affect those. I do remember that it was really hot though, so sometimes I get invited to picnics and don't go for fear of excessive sun.
BBQs...I don't go to heaps of bbqs either! In my recent memory I went to a daytime one at like 1pm,...we had that bbq one for New Years Eve at your place... I don't even remember what time it was and I didn't mind when it got dark... and I also can't remember the last time I watched a sunset whilst drinking beer? Omg I sound like a killjoy... maybe I am? Just when it comes to doing social things, for me it's mostly dinners, gigs, things at night...or the occasional daytime thing on the weekend. I guess I'm just not as outdoor-y as the average West Australian...
it's weird - i don't consider myself an outdoorsy person either - i guess i just appreciate the opportunity to be so if i wish... which isn't often i'll grant you. it doesn't matter anyway, cause DS is dead and gone and won't be back for a long long time! i guess i just have to suck it up : )

you're right though - i don't know why i got my hopes up - i guess i just thought that after three years people would finally come around to the idea.
