Thing

Past McK/OC
Not much people know it but the first cat Rodney had wasn’t his, it belonged to his, incidentally, first serious girlfriend. They were around twenty five or twenty six and were living together. She was - amusing enough - a biologist working for a famous activist group. He was finishing his third …or was it the fourth PhD? Anyway details are unimportant. What it is important is that she came home one night holding a little fur bundle between her breasts.
- “What is that?” Asked a disgusted Rodney pointing to the dubious object under her shirt.
- “Its a kitten.” She answered taking the bundle from under her shirt and holding it for him to see over the dinning table/office/sex surface #9.
- “Are you sure?” Said Rodney poking it with the red marker he was using to grade exams.
- “Yes, I’m sure! And don’t poke her!” She said holding the fur ball out of his reach from the other side of the table.
- “Who gave it to you?” He asked while reclining back on his chair.
- “I found her behind the garbage bin at the alley.”
- “Ewww! It must have fleas and toxoplasmosis and who knows what else….Why did you brought it?”
Ok, yes. He wasn’t exactly happy to see a supposed cat - and a street one - in his apartment. And to be honest, the thing was quite disgusting at first sight. It had a dark grayish fur and seemed to be a bad result of a genetic experiment since one of his back legs had the general shape and size of a baseball.
The kitten ended up answering to the name of Thing. And after a few weeks of good meals and once the pus accumulated in her broken leg was drained it ended up being a good looking, playful and all around lovable cat.
Thing took the habit of falling sleep over Rodney’s neck every time Rodney himself feel asleep watching a sci-fi marathon or reruns of the Twilight Zone. Rodney usually awaked with one of Thing’s paws over his mouth, but he definitely loved to fall asleep while feeling the vibrations of Thing’s purr and trying not to sneeze every time Thing’s tail passed over his face.
When Rodney and Martha, that was her name, ended their relationship; Martha tried to take Thing away with her. Rodney felt lonely and totally abandoned for over two weeks. One day Martha abandoned Thing on Rodney’s bench at the University. Next to Thing’s carrying bag was a note from Martha. “I think Thing has claws more affiliated than yours. I can prove it, I have the scars.”
After that Rodney felt a lot less abandoned.
