What a great story, acidquill!

It could actually have been on the show: What it showed was the overwhelming protectiveness and love Dean has for him -- HE was badly injured, nearly eviscerated, yet all he thinks of is that his brother *could have been hurt*. The protector matters for nothing. It takes heavy-duty painkiller to knock him down into sleep-heal mode, yet in the middle of the night, he still finds Sammy in the dark of a strange room, injured, probably down a unit of blood or so, disoriented from medication that would have others down for the count -- nothing matters except ascertaining for HIMSELF that his little brother is alive and well and safe.

Even the position is important. Throwing his leg over Sam would be tremendously painful with an abdominal wound, probably with stitches, anodyne or not, but Dean is covering as much of a considerably larger body as he can with a protective mantle.

One of TV's greatest dichotomies is the fact that thanks to The Kripke, the writers, and the rather amazing Jensen, Dean is not only the fiercest of evilfighters. Dean is the fiercest of mommabirds. With him, they dovetail perfectly. Both work off the other to make him what he is.

If he could only stop believing the internal script John forced into his head from childhood and start believing that he is NOT a totally-expendable little soldier whose only value lies in what he can do for others and that Little Sammy is the only one whose needs count straight through death and beyond --
