It's hard to imagine
But one day you'll end up like me
Then she said
If you want to get out alive
Hold on for your life
For Dean, there's been only one truth since he was four years old: protect Sammy.
The bitch of it is, he's twenty-seven and just learning that he can't. There are things out there bigger than him. Stronger. Meaner. Like love. And even Dean Winchester can't control the way his brother's heart works. Everything was so much easier when all he had to fight were monsters.
He wants to take this from his brother. He would. He needs to.
Dean has enough blood on his hands that a little more won't matter that much. But Sam -- Sam doesn't need any another reason to hate himself. One more strike against the running tally Dean knows his brother is keeping like a twisted version of 'he loves me, he loves me not.' Only Sammy's goes more like I'll kill someone, I'll kill Dean, so there isn't an upside really.
Sam only has to say the word and Dean will take the shot. Hell, he doesn't even have to say anything. All Sam needs to do is walk away, go out and sit in the car. Let Dean handle this. But Sam's always making things harder than they have to be.
The shot cracks in the silence of the apartment and Dean flinches. He didn't hesitate when he took down Glen, but the sound of Sam pulling the trigger sets off an ache in his chest that won't be going away any time soon. Sure, Glen was a good guy that got tangled up in some bad shit; and yeah, Madison was a nice girl that got dragged into it right along with him. Neither of them deserved to end up dead.
But to Dean, they don't mean a damn thing. Because that silver bullet hit more than Madison's heart, it hit Sam's. And Dean couldn't save him.
