watch me pass by

Dean's never been one to be owned. His edges are too sharp, his mouth too quick. He grew up believing faster is always better and you don't slow yourself down by letting someone hold on too tight or too long.

Most of the time, that's exactly how he lives. The girls he picks up aren't the type for long term commitment. Even if they might be, it doesn't matter. Dean doesn't stick around long enough for anyone to get the wrong idea.

What someone should have told him is, sometimes it's not the holding on that kills you, it's the letting go.

He figures that out though, with Cassie. She cuts her ties as soon as she hears the word 'ghost.' And no matter how much Dean wants to keep her, she doesn't want him. She leaves his heart in pieces that he has to fit back together the best way he knows how.

He should have learned before her anyway. Because Sam didn’t just break his heart, Sammy ripped it out. But Dean has never compared his brother to anyone else, Sam is like a whole other language. What happens between the two of them can't be translated into anything other than what it is.

And while both Cassie and Sam let go, Sam came back. It doesn't look like he's giving Dean up this time. This time, he says it's for keeps.

Dean knows that if it isn't, he won't be able to put himself together again. So he keeps his distance, uses every edge he has to keep his brother from getting too close. Sam doesn't pay anything he does a damn bit of attention, just kisses him anyway and pulls him closer -- pressing his hips down into the mattress, sliding into him deep and slow and true, whispering god I love you so fucking much into his neck -- until Dean stops fighting.

It's then that Dean thinks being owned isn't so bad. Not that he’s ever had a choice when it comes to Sam.
