It's funny how I suddenly seem to give a crap about the Oscars only when a movie that I'm fannishly obsessed with is a possible contender. I usually don't really care about them (or any awards shows) either way. The film in question, just in case you didn't know, is Inglourious Basterds, and it managed to score 8 noms. However, since either The Hurt Locker or Avatar (*shudders*) have both the Best Director and Best Film in the bag (even though the latter clearly belongs to District 9, IMHO), and Avatar is a certainty to win every single tech award in existence(1), I'm only concerned about two awards in particular (or, well, six, but two are only due to other fandoms, and the other two don't count, as they may or may not be imaginary categories (which would have been awarded to D9 and Basterds, btw, but I'm digressing enough as it is)).
Basically, as long as Christoph Waltz wins for Best Supporting Actor and Tarantino wins for Best Original Screenplay (I'll spare you all of the gory details about my love affair with that screenplay. Suffice it to say that if I believed in marriage, and I could get away with it, I would probably marry the dialogue in that screenplay), I'll be happy. And hey, if Sally Sparrow Carey Mulligan happens to win Best Actress and In The Loop scores the Best Adapted Screenplay award, that would also be awesome. Oh, and it would also be cool to see Colin Firth win for Best Actor, but it would be even better to see a nomination for Sharlto Copely at the very least.
So, in what I guess can be called a celebration of Basterds' 8 nominations, have a picture of Tarantino nomming on Christoph's ear(2):
(1) Even though I also think these awards should go to D9 - sure, Avatar has revolutionary technology, but only because a squillion dollars and nearly a decade were spent on it. D9 was made for a budget of $30 million and was in production for less than a year, and it still looks as good as almost any other blockbuster out there, most of which cost infinitely more, in terms of both time and money, to make. In terms of a realistic cinematic revolution, D9 wins hands down. And no, I'm not prejudiced against Dances With Wolves/Pocahontas/Fern Gully-in-space, what on Earth would make you think that? ;p
(2) In unrelated news, it's quite bizarre to come across two pictures, from two completely different fandoms,
that both feature one male nomming on the ear of another. It's even more of a weird coincidence when one of those fandoms is, let's face it, my favourite fandom at the moment, and the other fandom is *thisclose* to being disowned. It's just... odd. Oh, and the other fandom is Skins, btw.
Also, in case you are interested,
here's the full list of nominees.
