Now that was the show I fell in love with last year. The first two episodes had their moments, sure, but they never managed to capture my attention the way that most of the episodes in the first series did. Thankfully, this episode came along, and reminded me just why I had a minor obsession with Being Human in the first half of last year.
The episode itself had all of the elements that I felt were lacking - the sense of humour, the music, the interaction between Mitchell, George, and Annie, not to mention the fact that George reminded me just why I adore him so. But really, it is Mitchell's final scene, not to mention the actual final scene of the episode, that really took things up a notch.
I loved that they went there with Mitchell. His vampire storyline is how a modern vampire story should be done. It doesn't rely on sexual metaphors (although, one could argue that there is a hint of vampires representing sexual predators), and so the story seems new and fresh. It's a story of nobility and all of its trapping, in a way. The head of state has been overthrown and someone has to step up to fill the power vacuum. They may not want to take the throne, but once they are set on that course, there is nothing they can do about it - they have to do horrible things and do dances with the most corrupt of beings in order to maintain something resembling order in their kingdom, IMHO, there are two ways this storyline can go. Either Mitchell changes them for the better, or he becomes Herrick, the vampire he helped overthrow - making deals with corrupt police officers to protect the vampire population, doing heinous things to prove that he has what it takes to control these vestiges of society from extinction, and eventually lose that sense of humanity which he has tried so hard to maintain over the course of the series so far. I'm torn between which option I want him to take. I don't think he will ever become Herrick, as such, but it would be such a fascinating journey if the writers did decide to actually go there.
However, there is still the issue of the fundies to deal with. So far, we have only seen them deal exclusively with werewolves, but we know that they have plans for every sort of supernatural creature that may be lurking on the streets. The fact that this is the case may prevent the series from taking the dark turn it would have to take if Mitchell were to claim the throne for his own. (Also, on a side note - OMFG! That ending still has me shaking my head in shock. I did not see that coming at all!)
I don't know how the series will go, I'm just glad that I'm once again counting down the days until the next episode.
