Title: Regrets - The Epilogue
Author:
acidpenguin46
Pairing: unrequited Sam/Gene, another pairing
Word Count: 398
Rating: Pale Blue Cortina
Warning: Some swearing, and slashy undertones, but nowhere near explicit levels. Oh, and un-betaed, so any mistakes are my own.
Summary: Gene sees something that brings past regrets back to the surface.
Spoilers: General Ashes to Ashes spoilers

NOTES: It's not exactly a happy ending, but given the darkness of the last bit I didn't think a truly happy ending (or even a literal one) was the right way to go. No one "dies" this time around though, so that's always a plus.

Previous part here.

Gene shook a cigarette loose from it's carton, placing the orange filter between his lips before bringing his hands up to shield his lighter's flame from the bitter wind coming through the wound-down windows of the Quattro. He inhales the smoke, holding it as for as long as humanly possible before exhaling, just to piss off Drake. She shot him a withering glance before turning her gaze back to the jewellery store across the road. God, he hated stake-outs.
"I need to go to the toilet."
"If by toilet you mean the shop up the street, I'll have a Coke."
"I'm not an errand boy. Get your own." Gene ignored Drake's rebuttal, and opened the door. Shivering from the biting cold,  he drew his coat closer to him. In doing so he almost missed it the first time, but the second time around there was no missing it. Memories of a small, brown-haired, brown-eyed picky pain from Hyde, poking the older man's nose while snuggled under his arm against wind almost as bitter as this, flooded his mind as he heard the same giggle as he heard then. His eyes wandered across the street.

The hair had barely changed. It was a little bit longer, but it still looked as though a hand had just been run through it distractedly. The eyes were hidden by aviator sunnies, but Gene knew what they would look like. Slightly squinted, with the little crinkles around the edges that were always there when that smile was on his face. He no longer wanted to hit the face behind the smile, and not for the first time that year he wished he'd realised that he hadn't really wanted to back then either.

The man behind the glasses nudged his friends shoulder, before leaning in to whisper something in his ear, and Gene noticed the way Sam's mouth lingered about the other man's ear for just a split-second longer than necessary, the way his unoccupied hand lightly brushed against the darker, more spiky haired man's long fingers. He moved back from the man's ear, that same smile plastered on his face. A smile of pure happiness, one in direct contrast to that of the man hidden across the road. Gene, feeling like an dill just standing there gawking for so long, continued his walk to the shop.

He didn't toast the article that night.

man love, sam/gene, life on mars, epic manpain!, fic
