So yesterday was an action packed day. And by that I mean I was out and about for pretty much the entire day. That rarely happens on a Sunday. Especially a Sunday that's my day off.
For the first time in a while, I woke up pretty early at 10 am (hey it's early for me). Normally, I'd be getting up around 12-2 on a day off, but I decided that I wanted to go to pride. Everyone's been talking about how fun it is and I wanted to go see what the fuss was all about. Though I really don't agree with the idea of "pride" being half naked men dancing on floats, if anything, I figured it would at least be entertaining to watch these men dancing in their underwear. Call me a hypocrite.
So we got there at around noon, found free parking and found a nice spot at Davie, right by the HSBC. There were some nice floats, and there were some ridiculous floats. My favourites were probably the big pirate ship and the Oasis one. They were just well made. Overall, I was pretty disappointed. It wasn't that fun nor exciting. I saw two hot guys in their underwear, everyone else was dancing too damn girly. Nothing wrong with it, but it's just not my thing. There were more overweight scantily clad old men than anything else, really.
Plus, while the concept of bringing all these people together for gay pride is nice, esp. with all the spectators, I have to wonder... Are most of the businesses there to actually promote gay pride, or basically just to make a profit because the parade is good exposure? Also, all the people watching with their kids are getting the wrong message. They're basically seeing that gay pride is sweaty, half naked men marching or writhing to disco house. How the hell can society see the queer culture as something more than sex and rainbows when a parade that's supposed to present our "pride" is just that?
I'm sure I don't know a lot of things about pride, and yes I know it's great to be able to hold a parade and celebrate that fact. But I just think mroe creativity is needed. IE: The celebrities float was basically guys in their underwear dancing. Can't it be drag queens or other gay guys just parading around as *gasp* celebrities? Cliché, yes, but also much classier.
Anyway, enough about the pride rant.
After pride, we all had to leave because Dante's brother "needed" the van. I didn't want my Sunday to go to waste but there seemed to be no one that was free. But then, lo and behold, Ronnie called, we chatted and realized we were both free for the evening. We decided that I head on over and see his new place then head out to watch a movie.
It was a really fun night and this was actually the first time Ronnie and I watched a movie, even though we've talked about it several times before. We agreed that "Superman Returns" was too long a movie to watch at 10:45 and opted for "The Descent." We bought our tickets about an hour early so we killed time by playing Time Crisis 3, where Ronnie discovered my lethal aim haha.
The movie was great. It has similiarities to "The Cave," but much, much better. It was more mature, and while there wasn't a great deal of character development (I can only remember one with a full arc), you still feel the emotions throughout the movie. I think the most entertaining part though, was watching Ronnie squirm and cover his eyes. Plus he let out a semi-loud whelp and jumped in one scene haha. Silly Ronnie, he doesn't know the trick is to squint/close one eye at scary parts. That's what I do at least. It's less scary yet you're still watching it. We were probably more scared because everyone in the theatre was, too. There was great audience energy.
I think I'll go to the gym tonight at 9...
