Only Awkward at First
Sirius swung open the door to the tower’s ledge, grinning madly as he raised two butterbeers. “Not firewhiskey, but they’ll do,” he said, kicking the door shut.
Remus grinned as his friend came over. Sirius handed him a bottle and sat down beside him, stealing a corner of the big red blanket. It was a little after midnight and the air was crisp and cold. They’d snuck out thousands of times and the astronomy tower had always been one of their favorite late-night haunts; but that night was special. It was the last night of the term. They’d finished their OWLs and the next morning they’d be back on the train, headed home. So they were celebrating.
Remus took a long drink of his butterbeer. “James and Peter not coming, then?”
Sirius rolled his eyes. “Prongs is moping over Lily.”
“Again?”
“Again. That’s all he thinks about. Oh, did you see Evans today? Isn’t she beautiful? Don’t you love her shiny red hair? I think I’m going to go let her emasculate me again.”
Remus laughed as Sirius shook his head disgustedly. “That… sounds about right for him. But Wormtail?”
“Oh, er… Forgot to ask. Think he’s doing homework or something.”
“It’s the last day of term, Pads, we don’t have homework.”
“Oh. Right.” Sirius grinned broadly, shaking the ends of his dark hair out of his eyes. “Well, then, mate! It’ll be just me and you tonight. Cheers.”
Remus reached up and clanked his bottle together with Sirius’. “Cheers.”
They sat there nursing their drinks, looking up at the twinkling stars.
“We ought to go inside soon,” Remus said.
“Why? The night’s still young. We’ve nothing to do tomorrow.”
Remus shrugged. “I suppose.”
“Don’t tell me you’re tired, Moony. Is that it?”
“I’m not!” Remus said defensively. “Just…” He looked away for a moment, shrugging. “It’s… it’s a bit awkward, that’s all. We don’t really spend much time together - just you and me.”
“That’s not true. Yeah, Pete and James are around a fair bit, but - “
“They’re always around.” Remus smirked a little. “And you can’t go anywhere without James. If I didn’t know better I’d say you were jealous.”
Sirius scoffed. “Of what? That red-haired harpy? Please. Prongs can have her.”
Remus rolled his eyes and sat his empty bottle down on the stone between his feet. “Not for Lily - of Lily. For four years you and he were best mates, Padfoot and Prongs, only now he’s got her on his mind instead of you.”
“That is ridiculous,” he said gruffly, crossing his arms and looking down at the ground. “You really have an imagination there, Moony, because - don’t know if you’ve noticed - but I fancy girls.”
Remus nodded blithely. “Of course. Girls.” He paused for half a second. “And James.”
“Right, and - Hey!” Sirius leaned up, his eyes bright, his tone scandalized but his eyes bright. “Impressive, Moony, I didn’t catch that one. But,” he said, looking suddenly more serious, “there’s nothing there.”
“If you say so, mate.”
“Yeah, I do. Don’t know what you’ve been thinking about, Moony. Maybe that dark, messy hair? Those skinny little arms? Those deep brown eyes behind those thick glasses?”
They stared at each other for half a moment before bursting into laughter.
“Oh, right,” Remus wheezed. “Sorry, but… But if I was ever going to go after a bloke, it wouldn’t be James.”
“Of course not. I mean, look at me,” Sirius said, grinning arrogantly.
Remus looked at him skeptically. “What?”
“Don’t tell me you wouldn’t pick me if you had the chance.” He waggled his eyebrows and Remus snorted a little in laughter. “I’d pick you over James.”
“Well, of course you…” Remus paused. “Wait, what? Are you saying you - “
“No! I just mean that… If I fancied boys. You know. You’re not so bad.”
“Oh.” Remus nodded. “Well. Yeah, okay. I mean…” He cleared his throat. “I’d, uh, pick you. I mean, if.”
Sirius nodded as well and they both stared at each other for a moment, awkwardly. They seemed to realize at the same time how close they were sitting, and as one they scooted marginally in opposite directions. Then Remus cleared his throat. “Er… Padfoot?”
“What?”
“Do you ever think that maybe… that’s why it’s weird between just me and you?”
“Because we might… what, fancy each other?” Sirius laughed, a little unsurely. “Er… Moony, we were just joking. You know that, yeah?”
“Right, yeah, Pads, but…” He looked down to the ground before meet Sirius’ eyes. “I mean, I don’t fancy you and you don’t fancy me.”
Sirius licked his lips. “Right. But that, er… What are you saying exactly, Remus?”
“I’m not sure, I just… I think that - “
But before he could finish, Sirius had leaned over and pressed his mouth hard over Remus’.
It was wet and awkward and they didn’t fit together quite right, but there was a soft warmth there that they both felt, and after a moment of shock and adjustment it started to feel more like a real kiss and less like an attack. Remus turned his head and Sirius moved closer, one hand fisted in the blanket beside Remus’ knee. Neither really knew what to do, if snogging a boy was the same as snogging a girl or if there were different rules, if they were allowed to enjoy it as much as they were.
Sirius pulled away finally, his lips parted and his eyes wide as he stared at Remus.
“What…” Remus shook his head, one hand on his lips. “What the hell was that?”
“I don’t know,” Sirius said honestly. “But it was… nice.”
Remus’ cheeks turned slightly pink and he looked away, lowering his hand. “Er… right. Yeah, it was. Nice.”
“I mean, I’m not saying I want to do it again, but - “
Remus shook his head quickly. “No! Right. I mean… I don’t either, not unless you do.”
“We could try again. Maybe. I did sort of…” He grinned, his eyes gleaming, a hint of mischief in his voice. “Just lunge at you.”
“Just once more,” Remus warned, leaning slightly closer. “Just to do it right.”
“Yeah.” Sirius had nearly closed the distance between them. “Do it right.”
For a half-second neither one of them moved. Then, decisively, Remus pulled Sirius to him and suddenly his lips were on Sirius’ and both of them were expecting it and it felt so damn good - Sirius yanked at the other boy’s arm, pressing closer, his tongue pushing into Remus’ mouth as Remus grabbed a handful of hair. It was dark, aggressive, strong - it was hard to hard, there was no softness there, no give, and whatever war they were waging, both wanted to come out the victor.
They separated about a centimeter, just for air, then Sirius pulled Remus’ bottom lip between his teeth, sucking hard before he pushed Remus away.
He gave the panting werewolf a quick grin, adjusting his collar and smoothing down his thick hair.
Remus looked at him for a long, silent moment. “Okay then. What do we do now, Pads?”
Sirius laughed. “I have no bloody idea.”
