Honeymoon

“Well ain’t this shiny,” Kaylee said, flipping through the journal River had given her. “All these pretty lined pages - an’ the cover’s got all them flowers on it. They look like jewels!”

Simon just nodded and hmmed nervously, slipping off his jacket.

“An’ I tried to save some o’ that real good cake they all made for us, but I think Jayne ate it all.” She laughed. “Ain’t that jus’ like Jayne? An’ he didn’t even get a present for us. Unless River lets ‘im go half in on the gifts she gave. That’s jus’ like him, too, tryin’ to get in on her hard work.”

Jayne was the last thing on Simon’s mind at the moment. “Y-yes… “ He folded his jacket nervously and undid another button of his stiff, cotton shirt.

“But ‘Nara’s gift… Ooh, those silk sheets sure are somethin’, huh? Bet they’re as nice as what she uses for her big, fancy clients. Can’t wait to use ‘em - bet you look even prettier wearin’ nothin’ but some emerald colored sheets. Hey, could you get my zipper for me, bao bei?”

Swallowing nervously, Simon pulled down the zipper on Kaylee’s big, foamy white dress. It took up nearly her whole bunk; he wasn’t even sure how she was able to sit down.

“Thanks,” she said, slipping her arms out of the dress and wiggling her way out of it. “Whoo! I sure do love my dress, but it feels nice to get out o’ all that fabric.” She shook her dress out and stuck it up with the pink one Mal had bought her for the big party more than a year previously. She gave Simon a quick smile before unhooking her bra and stowing it in the hamper under her bed. Simon swallowed again, his eyes stuck on Kaylee’s naked back.

She turned around and quickly shimmied out of her panties, then plopped down on the bed. “Well what’re ya waitin’ for?” she asked, laying back and putting her feet in his lap. “Doctor Tam, it’s time to attend to your husbandly duties.”

Simon put a hand on her ankle, looking intently away from his wife. He had no reason to be nervous, and he wasn’t nervous, but after all they’d been through, after all the times he’d floundered and said something he didn’t mean, they were married - together, they were husband and wife. And that shouldn’t feel different, but it did, and Simon couldn’t help the breath he drew in as he stared at her, soft and pale on her coarse camp blanket.

“What’s wrong?” she asked teasingly. “Ya gettin’ nervous?” With a sultry smile she stretched, arching her back a little off the bed.

“N-no, it’s…” He smiled and gently ran a hand along her calf. “It’s not that.”

“Well what’s up? We can go ‘head an’ put those sheets o’ ‘Nara’s on if ya want. Bet that would make us both a lot more comfy.”

That didn’t matter to him; Kaylee was the one really excited. He leaned down and ran the tip of his nose along her leg, shrugging out of his shirt. “We don’t need them,” he murmured, kissing his way to her knee. He moved up her body slowly, letting her push his pants down his legs with her feet.

“Aww, Simon… you’re so beautiful.”

He laughed lightly, stroking a cheek softer than silk. “Kaylee…” He kissed her forehead. “Not as beautiful as you.”
