I just read the-much-talked-about-essay of James Soriano. Contrary to other (most) people's reactions, and contrary to my reaction when i first read about it in my twitter timeline, I didn't find any wrong with it.
I guess, we do sometimes fall prey to our biases and jump into conclusions and quick to judge that we fail to take in what is intended by the writer. Even great writers are misunderstood. I think as readers we should also try to engage with the text as much as the writer is trying his best to communicate.
Filipino or Tagalog wasn't my mother tongue. English and Ilocano were the 2 languages I learned first. Perhaps what he was trying to say in his essay is that, we should have more appreciation of our own language. That it can be the language of the learned, yet we don't use it.
People are quick to judge, I am not exempted. It is damn hard to write and I think we need some writers like James Soriano once in a while...
Enough said.
