What happens when your circuit breaker panel is from the 50s...

So I tried to dry some towels today, only to find when pushing the "on" button for the dryer, nothing would happen but a little sizzlely sound. One more try and it turned on, but there was smoke coming out of the breaker! So I stopped the dryer and decided that all the towels would be hung out to dry today and it was time to call the landlord. Ah, won't it be fun this week to have the electrician come and take out the entire breaker box! I'm certain that is what will happen, since the thing is freakin' old. And looking at it closely, looks like there is rust along the breakers, which means past water, which is bizarre, but so many things are less than well-taken-care-of here from previous tenants. Of course, this replacement won't solve the wiring issues in the rest of the place, but it'll be nice to have one more old thing get replaced.
