In response to student questions about shoe removal customs, I did a search on the internet and was surprised to find that a lot of Americans were against doing so, and even more so at the reasons offered as to why, which fell into these main categories:

1) I feel my feet are ugly, so asking me to expose them is deeply offensive.
2) My shoes are an essential part of my outfit, so asking me to remove them is deeply offensive

and

3) It's rude to care more about your floors than my comfort, so asking me to remove is yada yada

Seriously, what the hell, America? Entitlement much? Especially since so many people there seem to believe "A man's home is his castle"...
