Title: Home for Christmas Author: achika_chanPairing: Past Insano/Spoonette. Spoony/Linkara, mentioned Oan/Insano and 80s Chick/Harvey
( Read more... )
This was fantastic! Though I spent most of it glaring at Spoonette and squeeing over the kids ... Gah, when are Oan and Insano gonna make moves at each other? Is someone gonna hafta lock them in a room or something? ... oh dear, since we know only vague things about Oan's backstory, maybe someone from said backstory will resurface and kidnap her and maybe Insano too and they'll both end up locked in a room ... that could be interesting but traumatic ...
“Shooting got delayed until the new year! When I found out the plans had changed, I thought it’d make a totally neat Christmas surprise to just…show up. I hope I’m still welcome?” The last was said tentatively, like she honestly wasn’t sure if she had a place there. Go away, you meanie, you're a bad mother and you broke Insano's heart! And you'll get in Oan's way!
“MOM!” he shrieked in delight and ran over to hug her. “You’re here! You said you weren’t coming but you’re here!” Spoonette laughed and hugged him tight. “I had a change of plans. Oh my god, just look at you! You’re getting so tall! And you’re wearing the sweater I got you!” *squees grudgingly* (See, my issue is that my parents got divorced when I was two, never fought, my dad always paid child support on time, and he swore to always live less than an hour away until I was in college, so I got to visit him once or twice a week pretty consistently. It really bothers me when parents don't think of their kids first.)
Spoonette changed clothes into a party dress, touched up her makeup, and put some shiny red and gold ribbons in her hair. “How do I look?” She asked, giving a little twirl. “Beautiful, like always,” Insano said. She grinned. “You big suck up, you never once told me I looked anything less than ‘great’” “That’s because you never did,” Insano said. *wibbles*
“Mom helped with some of them!” he said, and Insano saw Spoony give Spoonette an evaluating look. There was a tense silence for a moment before Spoony broke it. “How long are you staying for this time?” Spoony asked. *hi fives Spoony* Good, someone having the proper reaction to her showing up! Let's have drinks, Spoony! … I'm too young to drink for real, but I'd drink hot chocolate!
It was immediately followed by a delighted shriek from the kitchen and a yell of “OHMYGOSH YOU TOTAL BITCH YOU DIDN’T TELL ME YOU WERE COMING!” There was a lot of laughter, and Harvey stumbled out of the kitchen rubbing at his ear. “Good lord those dames have got pipes on ‘em,” Spoony laughed. “It was even worse in High School, trust me,” Harvey gave Insano a sympathetic look. “I don’t know how you put up with it,” Bahahahhhaha!
That was when Linkara and 90s Kid came in to the room, Linkara holding the hand of that little girl he was taking care of while they tried to figure out her living situation. She still wasn’t talking much, but apparently Linkara and Spoony had felt confident enough to expose her to a loud group of people. Following on her heels was the puppy that Spoony had rescued on one of his cases. Insano couldn’t help but be amused at the sight. The two of them just couldn’t help taking in strays that needed their help. Auuuuuuuuuuuuw!
The girl clutched tighter at Linkara and tried to hide behind him, but she was staring at Sol with wide eyes, especially at his hair. And now I ship them. (Once I started a story that would take place about twelve years after today, with Linkara and Liz married with three kids and once of them would be Meg, and retired!Insano meets them in the grocery store and they catch up and start hanging out more and SoI really bonds with their kids …)
Insano watched as she hesitated for a moment before nodding, and the two kids and the dog went to go play. *SQUEEEEEEEE*
Insano was a little surprised that Oan had shown up, but she seemed to have developed soft spots for Spoony and Linkara. *headdesk* Nooooo, she likes YOU, Insano! Open your gorram eyes! Get her under some mistletoe!
“It’s been…interesting. You missed Reynolds trying to sing carols. Mr. Finevoice nearly strangled him,” Oan said. Hee hee!
Spoonette said, coming out of nowhere and hooking her arm with Insano’s. She handed him a plastic plate with some food on it. Spoonette gave Oan a curious look. “I haven’t met you yet. Hi!” *snarls*
“Oh,” Oan said, “Right, of course. Um, Hi. I’ve heard so much about you,” And then a little piece of Oan died inside.
“Oh my God, I love your shoes, they’re so cute!” Spoonette said. Insano couldn’t see anything special about Oan’s shoes. They were just plain black heels, and compared to the gold shiny stilettos that Spoonette was wearing they seemed even plainer. Oan was clearly just as confused as Insano was. “You have to tell me where you got them. No, wait, 80s Chick should hear this too, she’ll be so jealous if you don’t tell her too. You don’t mind if I borrow her, do you, Wayne?” Spoonette asked, grey eyes wide and innocent. Insano knew he was being manipulated, she had used that tactic on him far too often for him not to realize that she was using it, but that didn’t mean it stopped working, and Insano had no idea what she was planning. “Of course not. The three of you play nice,” Insano said, narrowing his eyes at Spoonette in warning. She giggled and grabbed Oan’s hand, dragging her forcibly to the kitchen. Oan gave Insano a panicked look but allowed herself to be pulled away. Spoonette, I will MURDER YOU if you mistreat Oan in any way! I don't know what happened to Oan in her backstory, but it was pretty traumatic and probably involved Diamanda Hagan, she doesn't need another dominant woman fucking with her brain!
Reynolds nearly dropped a tray of food that 80s Chick and Harvey had made and 80s Chick nearly took the tray and hit him over the head with it. Spoonette declared Linkara ‘totally hot and adorable’ and congratulated Spoony on snagging such a ‘bodacious’ boyfriend. Harvey treated everyone to some quality Christmas carols, and a slightly tipsy 80s Chick had taken advantage of the mistletoe Jackson had brought to corner Harvey and lay a kiss on him that had everyone else cheering and hollering at them through the laughter. *sporfles* So cute!
Spoonette took the bright ribbons out of her hair and gave them to Meg, carefully doing her hair for her and getting a shy, pleased smile in return. Linkara and Spoony presented Meg and Sol both with 100 piece sets of colored pencils and a sketch book each, and they had sprawled out on the floor to draw with their gifts. Awwwww!
“We had a totally great chat. She kept looking like she wanted to run away from me though. But I get it, not everyone’s comfortable with the ex of the man they’re crushing on,” Spoonette said. “…What?” Insano asked, and he was pretty sure he was staring at Spoonette like one of them was crazy and he couldn't quite figure out who it was. It was far too late for him to be thinking and for her to be teasing him. Ok … *sighs* I can accept that, I suppose. SOMEBODY needed to hit those two over the head with a 2x4 to make them notice each other's feelings … I was worried Spoonette was gonna try and sabotage them and then I would have had to kill her.
*headdesk* Nooooo, she likes YOU, Insano! Open your gorram eyes! Get her under some mistletoe!
LOL they would both be so embarrassed by the mistletoe.
Hee hee!
:D!
*snarls*
Calm, dearie. LOL.
And then a little piece of Oan died inside.
LOL just a little.
Spoonette, I will MURDER YOU if you mistreat Oan in any way! I don't know what happened to Oan in her backstory, but it was pretty traumatic and probably involved Diamanda Hagan, she doesn't need another dominant woman fucking with her brain!
You really do jump to the Worst Possible Situation, don't you?
*sporfles* So cute!
80s Chick kind of crushes on Harvey, a little, but she only recently got dumped by Dan so she's not looking for anything serious. Harvey has no objections to dames wanting to smooch him.
Awwwww!
The kids are too adorable.
Ok … *sighs* I can accept that, I suppose. SOMEBODY needed to hit those two over the head with a 2x4 to make them notice each other's feelings … I was worried Spoonette was gonna try and sabotage them and then I would have had to kill her.
LOL they would both be so embarrassed by the mistletoe. Now I'm picturing me perched on a chair and dangling some mistletoe over their heads from a fishing pole and cackling. Because I am up to late and need to go to bed.
Calm, dearie. LOL. NO! *grumbles stubbornly* Bad parent ... you have no right to cuddle up with your ex after what you put him through ... no cookies for you, Spoonette!
LOL just a little. I heard it! It cried a sad cry ... like a breaking champagne glass ...
You really do jump to the Worst Possible Situation, don't you? Yes! Yes I do! I wish I didn't, but it's how my brain works. We don't have a lot of information, we just know it was bad and now Oan has trouble with people, so I jumped to "Diamanda Hagan: Terrifying Mob Boss" because that's how my brain works. Also, on the run from the Mob because she used to do their accounting is better than rape, and I really don't want it to be rape.
80s Chick kind of crushes on Harvey, a little, but she only recently got dumped by Dan so she's not looking for anything serious. Harvey has no objections to dames wanting to smooch him. Oh, I thought they were together! (Dan dumped her? What a jerk ... let's go egg his house!)
The kids are too adorable. They really are.
LOL give me - and Spoonette - some credit. "Hey, Insano, that GIRL over there is a GIRL, and she LIKES YOU. She keeps LOOKING AT YOU. And BLUSHING. GO USE BIOLOGY, IT'LL BE SUPER EFFECTIVE."
NO! *grumbles stubbornly* Bad parent ... you have no right to cuddle up with your ex after what you put him through ... no cookies for you, Spoonette!
Aww, she's not a bad mom just because she lives in California.
I heard it! It cried a sad cry ... like a breaking champagne glass ...
Because clearly bringing his blonde, vivacious ex to the Christmas party means they're going to get back together, right D:? And then Spoony pulls her aside and kind of laughs at her because LOLOL NO, it doesn't work between Insano and Spoonette and never has and never will.
Oh, I thought they were together! (Dan dumped her? What a jerk ... let's go egg his house!)
Nope, not together. Dan dumped her for Dolly, and that actually got mentioned in 80s Chick's first appearance.
"Hey, Insano, that GIRL over there is a GIRL, and she LIKES YOU. She keeps LOOKING AT YOU. And BLUSHING. GO USE BIOLOGY, IT'LL BE SUPER EFFECTIVE."
Aww, she's not a bad mom just because she lives in California. Until I know more of her side of things, I can't stop thinking of her as a deadbeat mom who abandoned her family. I'm sorry, but I can't!
Because clearly bringing his blonde, vivacious ex to the Christmas party means they're going to get back together, right D:? And then Spoony pulls her aside and kind of laughs at her because LOLOL NO, it doesn't work between Insano and Spoonette and never has and never will. It was the "shoes" line that made my heart sink. Because Spoonette is blonde and glamorous and was the Popular Girl in High School, and Oan already has the self confidence of a ... I dunno, a scared turtle, and always resented the Popular Girls in High School because they made fun of her for her brains, and all her friends-who-were-guys chased the Popular Girls, and now it's happening all over again! Then Spoony tells it like it is and thank god for that. Spoony needs to be Oan's new Conscience.
Nope, not together. Dan dumped her for Dolly, and that actually got mentioned in 80s Chick's first appearance. *headdesk* I probably read that at some point, but there's been so much information stuffed into my head lately I'm surprised I remember anything at all about fandom right now.
Spoonette wants Insano to be happy. Awwwwwww! (Wait, what, I thought I didn't like her! Gah, emotions are confusing!)
Until I know more of her side of things, I can't stop thinking of her as a deadbeat mom who abandoned her family. I'm sorry, but I can't!
Hmmmm.
Spoonette just wanted to get her away from Insano so that she could find out more about this mysterious Oan lady she hears so much about from Sol and who very obviously has a crush on her ex. But yeah, I suppose that was kind of ambiguous at the moment, wasn't it?
Then Spoony tells it like it is and thank god for that. Spoony needs to be Oan's new Conscience.
"Seriously, don't worry about her. Well, okay, worry a little because if she thinks you're going to hurt either Sol or Insaono she'll murder you in your sleep. But she's not a romantic rival,"
*headdesk* I probably read that at some point, but there's been so much information stuffed into my head lately I'm surprised I remember anything at all about fandom right now.
She and Insano became Single BFFS and hang out and she tries to give him advice about Oan but Oan's not exactly a normal girl most of the time and occasionally 80s Chick is stumped.
Awwwwwww! (Wait, what, I thought I didn't like her! Gah, emotions are confusing!)
"... oh dear, since we know only vague things about Oan's backstory, maybe someone from said backstory will resurface and kidnap her and maybe Insano too and they'll both end up locked in a room ... that could be interesting but traumatic ... "
I'm not mean, it's just that my brain sometimes spits out these absolutely evil ideas. Comes of starting fandom life with Heroes, I expect.
It's probably not a good sign when I say "is someone gonna hafta lock them in a room to make them realize they're attracted to each other?" and then immediately jump to "oh gods, someone from Oan's Mysterious Past is going to kidnap them and lock them in a room and it'll be really dark and twisted and scary and they'll make out and get rescued by Spoony's SWAT team in the end after Insano's been terrified out of his mind because he doesn't want to leave Solomon without a father and it's all totally because Oan left Diamanda Hagan's Mob or something and you don't just walk away from Diamanda Hagan's Mob and expect to live ...
Gah, when are Oan and Insano gonna make moves at each other? Is someone gonna hafta lock them in a room or something?
LOL sorry to say that Oan/Insano is all Spiffy's territory, take it up with her. :D
Go away, you meanie, you're a bad mother and you broke Insano's heart! And you'll get in Oan's way!
Whoa, whoa, whoa. That's some major hostility there. Spoonette's not a bad mother, she loves Sol and does her best with the circumstances. She writes and calls and Skypes, but she's not the kind of person meant for the picket-fence, kid, and dog lifestyle and she knows it. And it was either stay and be miserable and make everyone else miserable because of that or leave and go after her dream and try to make everything work. Yeah, she broke Insano's heart but that wasn't what she wanted to do. She had to look after her own mental health or she wouldn't be any sort of mother to Sol at all.
*squees grudgingly*
She really does love him.
(See, my issue is that my parents got divorced when I was two, never fought, my dad always paid child support on time, and he swore to always live less than an hour away until I was in college, so I got to visit him once or twice a week pretty consistently. It really bothers me when parents don't think of their kids first.)
Makes sense. But it's important to remember that Spoonette wasn't only thinking of herself.
*hi fives Spoony* Good, someone having the proper reaction to her showing up! Let's have drinks, Spoony! … I'm too young to drink for real, but I'd drink hot chocolate!
LOL sorry to say that Oan/Insano is all Spiffy's territory, take it up with her. :D Then I've just given her some terrible ideas ... *headdesk* Why do I always go the ANGST route?
Look at it from my perspective: up until now, all we've really known about Spoonette is that she sent Insano into a depressed coma and abandoned her family - including a very young child - so she could go be glamorous in Hollywood. Not exactly the picture of a nice person. Seems selfish and immature. Having "met" her in the story I feel a bit better about her, especially now that you've told me she regularly keeps in contact with Sol. But before now, based on the information I had, I just thought she was a bitch. If she knew she was going to be miserable, why marry Insano in the first place? If it was a young love thing and it fizzled out for her, and she figured out she didn't want to settle down, why bring a kid into that mess? Again, I'm sure she's very nice, and it's adorable that she put ribbons in Meg's hair and all, but I'm not gonna be waving a Spoonette flag here anytime soon.
Makes sense. But it's important to remember that Spoonette wasn't only thinking of herself. She should have thought of that before bringing a kid into an unhappy marriage and then moving across the country.
Spoony just gets very protective. As he should! Spoonette didn't see how upset Insano was when she left! Spoony had to deal with that!
Harvey was fun to write in this. Harvey is always fun for you to write, don't lie.
Then I've just given her some terrible ideas ... *headdesk* Why do I always go the ANGST route?
LOL.
Having "met" her in the story I feel a bit better about her, especially now that you've told me she regularly keeps in contact with Sol.
That's been mentioned a few times, actually. There was even a story about her calling. :D
But before now, based on the information I had, I just thought she was a bitch.
Meh, I guess that's understandable.
If she knew she was going to be miserable, why marry Insano in the first place?
Ah, they were never married. I suppose I've never actually said that, have I?
If it was a young love thing and it fizzled out for her, and she figured out she didn't want to settle down, why bring a kid into that mess?
She wanted Sol, and she wanted the relationship to work. It just...didn't. And when it didn't, she did what was best for her and everyone.
Again, I'm sure she's very nice, and it's adorable that she put ribbons in Meg's hair and all, but I'm not gonna be waving a Spoonette flag here anytime soon.
I guess. Fuck, people aren't supposed to hate Spoonette. She was in a bad situation and did what she could to salvage it. Yeah, Insano was heartbroken but that happens, and she wasn't exactly happy herself. But that was years ago and things have mostly worked out. I'm going to have to write something from her POV aren't I?
She should have thought of that before bringing a kid into an unhappy marriage and then moving across the country.
Well, it's marginally better than her staying and being unhappy with giving up her dreams and resenting everything and fighting with Insano all the time in front of Sol.
As he should! Spoonette didn't see how upset Insano was when she left! Spoony had to deal with that!
Yeah. Hmm, I'm really going to have to write Spoonette's side to that.
That's been mentioned a few times, actually. There was even a story about her calling. :D I remember her calling once and Sol treating it like a really big deal, hence me assuming she didn't call all that much. I'm glad I was wrong!
Ah, they were never married. I suppose I've never actually said that, have I? What? No, no you never did! How old was SoI when she abandoned them left?
She wanted Sol, and she wanted the relationship to work. It just...didn't. And when it didn't, she did what was best for her and everyone. I don't understand why her leaving was the best option, I really don't.
I guess. Fuck, people aren't supposed to hate Spoonette. She was in a bad situation and did what she could to salvage it. Yeah, Insano was heartbroken but that happens, and she wasn't exactly happy herself. But that was years ago and things have mostly worked out. I saw her as a female "deadbeat dad" stereotype until this story, to be honest. I mean, if she had been "Spoony" and walked out on "his" family, leaving "his" partner heartbroken and raising a child alone ... would there be ambiguity here? If so, ok, that's good, Spoonette, isn't a jerk, but if her leaving is only ok because she's a woman, and leaving your family to pursue a career is only ok for women ... we have a nasty double-standard here.
I'm going to have to write something from her POV aren't I? Possibly? Probably? I'm very interested to hear her side of things, and thus far we've only seen this family from the eyes of Spoony and Insano and the gang here ...
Well, it's marginally better than her staying and being unhappy with giving up her dreams and resenting everything and fighting with Insano all the time in front of Sol. And this is why we don't have kids until we're ready! Kids change everything (or at least, they should ...) Sometimes, they mean putting aside your dreams. Shouldn't have to, but sometimes that's the case. Because you made a commitment to this kid.
Yeah. Hmm, I'm really going to have to write Spoonette's side to that. Yeah. Right now she's not looking so good. Did she actually have a gig lined up in Hollywood and everything, or was she just running off to pursue the Hollywood dream and got lucky and cast in movies? If there was a real paying gig lined up, I'd stop thinking of her as immature, if it was just the dream I'm gonna have a really hard time liking her.
LOLOLOL. Truth. :D A lot of your fics it's like "a random Harvey appears! And he is awesome! He gets some very funny lines! Love and worship him!" and we do, because he is Harvey.
What? No, no you never did! How old was SoI when she abandoned them left?
He was around four or five. She and Insano tried to make it work, they really did, and she waited until he was old enough to go to school before she went out to California.
I don't understand why her leaving was the best option, I really don't.
Well, she and Insano wouldn't have stayed together even if she had stayed in town. And she would have been around Sol more physically, but it wouldn't have made her happy staying in that town and she would have lost a lot of the life experiences that helped her mature and Grow Up.
Nope, she's not a deadbeat mom. And I never said it was okay because she was a woman. I never really said it was okay at all. It was a tough decision made in a tough situation.
Possibly? Probably? I'm very interested to hear her side of things, and thus far we've only seen this family from the eyes of Spoony and Insano and the gang here ...
Then I might have to do that.
And this is why we don't have kids until we're ready! Kids change everything (or at least, they should ...) Sometimes, they mean putting aside your dreams. Shouldn't have to, but sometimes that's the case. Because you made a commitment to this kid.
Yeah, maybe Spoonette and Insano shouldn't have had Sol, but they love him and wouldn't change that decision.
Actually, she did kind of have something lined up. She knew somebody from the theater department in her college, and they knew someone in Hollywood, and...well, you know how things like that work. It wasn't a 100% sure deal, but if she hadn't at least gone out there for the audition she'd have kicked herself forever for wasting such an amazing opportunity to do what she'd always wanted to do.
A lot of your fics it's like "a random Harvey appears! And he is awesome! He gets some very funny lines! Love and worship him!" and we do, because he is Harvey.
LOLOLOLOLOL it's funny because it's true. I just can't help myself. :D
Gah, when are Oan and Insano gonna make moves at each other? Is someone gonna hafta lock them in a room or something?

Reply

Until I know more of her side of things, I can't stop thinking of her as a deadbeat mom who abandoned her family. I'm sorry, but I can't!

*headdesk* I probably read that at some point, but there's been so much information stuffed into my head lately I'm surprised I remember anything at all about fandom right now.

Dayum, I'm fucked-up sometimes ...

Spoony just gets very protective.
Bahahahhhaha!
Harvey was fun to write in this.
Auuuuuuuuuuuuw!

She should have thought of that before bringing a kid into an unhappy marriage and then moving across the country.
Spoony just gets very protective.
As he should! Spoonette didn't see how upset Insano was when she left! Spoony had to deal with that!
Harvey was fun to write in this.

Harvey is always fun for you to write, don't lie.
LOLOLOL. Truth. :D

I remember her calling once and Sol treating it like a really big deal, hence me assuming she didn't call all that much.

LOLOLOL. Truth. :D
A lot of your fics it's like "a random Harvey appears! And he is awesome! He gets some very funny lines! Love and worship him!" and we do, because he is Harvey.

Yeah, maybe Spoonette and Insano shouldn't have had Sol, but they love him and wouldn't change that decision.
