Summary: Mechakara watches his former Black Lantern for completely logical reasons.
Lurking was something that Mechakara did well. He was patient, so very, very patient, and knew how to keep silent. And that was what he was doing now, though he was not stalking his usual victim. No, today he found himself states away from his former master.
If anyone had asked, though they most likely would have been killed before they could get the words out, Mechakara would have told them that he was simply observing Linkara’s allies, their strengths and weaknesses, for the eventuality that they came to Linkara’s defense.
And that was true. Mostly.
Mechakara wasn’t sure why he had chosen this particular ally to observe first. Oh, there were reasons. Good ones. This ally possessed a large arsenal of weapons, and was extraordinarily close to Linkara. There were also the facts that he had his own robot companion, and that observing him also allowed Mechakara to keep an eye on the deranged doctor.
But none of those reasons seemed quite right, as he played them in his head.
Spoony yelped in pain, drawing Mechakara’s attention back to him. He’d apparently accidentally cut himself instead of the sandwich he was preparing, and he put the injured finger in his mouth, licking away the blood while he grabbed a paper towel from the roll.
Mechakara watched as Spoony removed the injured finger from between his lips and wrapped it in the paper towel. There was blood at the corner of his mouth that he didn’t seem to realize was there, and Mechakara remembered seeing that face dripping with the blood of whatever human had been unfortunate enough to cross the Black Lantern’s path.
He’d been an annoying companion. Impulsive, and too sarcastic for his own good by far. But his desire to end humanity had dovetailed so neatly with Mechakara’s own that it had been worth it. And keeping him reined in wasn’t too difficult, not for a robot who had no reason to fear the undead man’s hunger for flesh.
But that had been before he had been revived and had the clone reintegrated into him. And now Mechakara was carrying out his plans by himself. It required some adjusting and reworking, but the plans could commence without the Black Lantern.
After his meal, Spoony took over the living room with Burton and his toolkit. Apparently it was time to upgrade the blue robot. Spoony did the minor things with Burton still online, talking quietly and steadily to the robot as he did so, inconsequential things meant to distract and comfort. Spoony’s work was quick and competent with the ease of an education in computers and a lot of practice and Mechakara could suddenly see why his own universe’s Burton had been so reluctant at the beginning to join the cause.
How long had it been since Mechakara had last been properly upgraded? Not since he’d come to this universe, at the least. He could do little things himself, but without someone else, another pair of hands trusted enough to work on him while he was powered down…Well, that didn’t matter. He was perfectly functional.
There was no need to think about how it would feel to have brand new parts, or increased processing power, making things feel like he was moving and thinking even faster than the electricity running through his circuits until he adjusted to his new capabilities. And there was definitely no need to think about his former Black Lantern being the one to do it, opening him up with those capable hands and fixing everything that had become broken or outdated since Mechakara’s arrival, keeping up a running commentary as he worked and stroking Mechakara’s hair and metal like he was currently petting Burton.
Mechakara turned away. It was time to move on to the next ally. Perhaps the Nostalgia Chick, who would remind him that humans deserved to be punished for their treatment of the mechanical beings they had created. Or maybe the Critic and Ask That Guy, paragons of human depravity.
