or, Jury Booty
I stole the subject line from the Jan. 29 entry of one of my favorite blogs, Keef's Daily Unintelligible Screeds.
Jury Booty? All right, I didn't actually get any booty while on jury duty. ("Uhh, your honor, the jury needs more time for, uh, deliberations, yeah.") We convicted the defendant on aggravated assault 2nd degree (ingredients: Intent, Bodily Injury with a deadly weapon) and Possession of an Instrument of Crime. I feel comfortable with our verdict and the other jurors in that we came to the proper conclusions without the idea that we should hurry. I also appreciated the lawyers' work in this case. The assistant DA prosecuting the case was on the whole quite reasonable, despite a couple of odd outbursts that seemed forced. I was not so comfortable with the idea the defendant would likely be sent to jail, at least in the sense that I don't think our current jail system is much of a place for violent tendencies to be alleviated.
I had a drink after the trial with the one we selected as foreman, a Michael, tall guy with shoulder-length dreads and the most charismatic guy on the panel, and we may become friends in some form. This may also mean I go to the Mexican Post on occasion for happy hour, as he tells me he frequents the place. I like having a couple of guy friends who can know I'm a horny bastard but laugh about it and just chill. I am reminded about that quote from Nicholson Baker, about how he has very little in common with other men except regarding sex. I do like sports more than Baker does, though.
Someday I may get around to recording my activities a day or two after they happen! I'm even behind in my print journal.
Also, speaking of earlier activities, Trishy, I hope you don't mind if I steal from my Iowa report I emailed to you to post here next time.
