Just got back from the Flight Team Nationals in Ohio. The actual event is called SAFECON. The orginaztion that runs it is called NIFA (National Intercollegiate Flying Association). I didn't do very well in any of the events because I was out of practice. However, our team placed 14th out of 31 schools. Not bad for an unfunded, unsupported team! In case you didn't know, their is not much support for the Aviation Porgam at San Jose State. The school seems more concerned about Engineering and Busniess. Aviation seems to be a thorn in its side. It is too bad because SJSU is the only state school in California that offers a 4 year degree in Aviation. There are a few 2 year schools and one private chritian school that offer aviation programs, but not a four year degree. Being at the competition and seeing all the different schools made me think about my choice of colleges. Although I would still not go to Embrey Riddle, I could have gone to the University of North Dakota, Western Michigan, Purdue, Kent State, College of the Rockies, or even The Ohio State University. Then again, being close to home has been convienient, especially with my family and friends. Plus, it made dealing with my recovery from surgery a lot easier. Being a long distance away would not have been convienient. All I can say is that everything happens for a reason and you have to the best with what you have got.
Speaking of school, I am sick of it! I can't wait to graduate and leave it all behind. I have been here for too long and I am losing my focus and motiviation. I want to be able to move on, finish my flight training, and start instructing so I can build hours and get a job. My original plan was to get a job with a regional airline, like my other pilots do. However, I recently discovered another opportunity while in Ohio. One of the major supporters of this year's competition was Air Net Systems. They let us use half of their hangar and their other facilities during the competition. I would really like to work for this company. Basically, they are a charter cargo company that specializes in unique cargo. They mainly transport bank records, organs for donation, and even time-critcal radiation medications. Their fleet mainly consist of Learjets which have been striped down just to carry cargo. However, they also operate B58 Barons, Piper Chieftans, and Cessna Caravans for cargo as well. They do most of their work at night which means most of the pilots work at night and sleep during the day. The great thing about this company is that I will be able to move up to flying jet aircraft in about half the time I would flying for a regional airline. Plus, I would also help me tranistion to being a corporate pilot or an aerial firefighter.
