Abilities
Character's Canon Abilities: Even as a rookie lawyer Mia showed great promise - part of how she ended up at the Grossberg Firm under the (partial) tutelage of Diego Armando. Though very intelligent and logical, Mia also cares deeply for her clients and the truth. Age only made her richer and deeper, to the point where she was well known as possibly the best defense attorney in the area and certainly a force to be reckoned with. She also proved to be a great teacher, able to draw out the best of Phoenix's abilities to help make him a truly great lawyer. Though the bulk of Mia's canon abilities are mental/intellectual, but she is the eldest daughter of the main branch of a powerful channeling school/family (so powerful, in fact, that they act as advisors to the government). Before she became a lawyer, she was to have become the head of the family, suggesting that she has significant spiritual powers.
Conditional: If your character has no superhuman canon abilities, what dormant ability will you give them? Since Mia has (presumably) more or less let her spiritual powers rest for many years, it's likely that she can no longer channel the dead, as her sister can. However, since the powers are still there (and to avoid needlessly repeating powers), they will alter their expression upon her arrival. Now, Mia will be able to use her powers to summon animal forms; a bit like a Patronus in Harry Potter. The size, complexity, and tangibility of the animal will depend upon the strength of her concentration and spiritual power. Practically speaking, even once she figures out how to do it (she's not really used to using her powers), she'll likely just be summoning dozens of tiny adorable kittens to plague Diego. Unless, of course, circumstances demand otherwise...
Weapons: her breasts None, though official comics have suggested that she hits pretty hard and knows kendo so she is likely to at some point to pick up at the very least a stick to defend herself with.
History/Personality/Plans/etc.
Character History: Mia is the eldest daughter of the Fey family, and was supposed to become the next head of the Kurain Village and channeling tradition. This changed, however, when her mother, Misty Fey, was made the scapegoat of the investigation of the murder of Gregory Edgeworth (the DL-6 incident) and subsequently disappeared. In order to find out what happened to her mother, Mia left the village to become a lawyer, effectively leaving her sister Maya to become the next head. As in-fighting in the Fey family was also well documented, Mia did not want to fight her sister for the leadership of the clan.
In her first trial, Mia is predictably very nervous. She is set to defend Terry Fawles, an escaped convict accused of the murder of the policewoman who put him behind bars 5 years prior. Fawles admits that he had escaped in order to meet the deceased policewoman, Valerie Hawthorne, but insists that he hasn't killed her. Mia knows she took the case because she alone believes Fawles is telling the truth. In spite of (or because of) the eyewitness testimony, Mia proves that Fawles is innocent, and that both the crime 5 years ago and the crime then were set-ups. 5 years earlier, Valerie Hawthorne and her younger sister Dahlia had agreed with Fawles to steal a diamond from their father, under the guise of a ransom. They were to split the money 3 ways. But both Hawthorne sisters betrayed Fawles, Dahlia jumping off a bridge with the diamond and Valerie giving the testimony that put Fawles away. Dahlia then killed her sister when Valerie threatened to come clean about the crime. Fawles, completely in love with Dahlia, drinks poison on the witness stand, as Mia is just one piece of testimony away from proving his innocence and Dahlia's guilt. Both Mia and her partner Diego are devastated; Mia begins to cry, and an angry Diego reminds her that it isn't time to cry yet.
Mia does not return to the courtroom for a year, in the meantime beginning a relationship with Diego. Unfortunately, Diego is "murdered" in the courtroom cafeteria by poison slipped into his coffee (he later returns from his poison-induced coma as Godot). Though she is at the time unable to prove it, Mia suspects that Diego’s “death” is thanks to the witness he was interviewing at the time - Dahlia Hawthorne. When Mia finally does return to court, she is nervous as she defends a young man named Phoenix Wright, accused of killing a romantic rival. The victim, a pharmacology student named Doug Swallow, had previously dated Wright's current girlfriend - Dahlia Hawthorne.
As the trial progresses, Mia becomes more and more confident. She is able to link the death of Doug Swallow to the murder of Diego Armando, though Wright decides to more or less destroy the evidence. Even when faced with the threat of losing her attorney's badge, Mia coolly proves that Dahlia killed Swallow and intended to kill Wright. At the end of the trial, the judge presses about the relationship between Mia and Dahlia - and Mia calmly replies that it had no bearing on the outcome of the trial.
After the trial, Mia begins her mentorship of Phoenix, suggesting that even though Dahlia hurt him on the stand, he should forget about her and move on. Phoenix hopes that he meets Mia again, since he wants to become a lawyer to save a friend. Years later, Phoenix is working at Mia's law firm, and she mentors him through his first case with her gentle guidance and leading questions. Mia herself is a highly accomplished defense attorney, the best in the business and, as Edgeworth reminds Phoenix, one of the biggest names in the lawyering world.
Her strong sense of virtue and desire for truth, however, ultimately result in her death at Redd White's hands. White wanted to keep her from investigating him and his connection to the DL-6 incident, but with the help of Mia's sister Maya and the Kurain Channeling Tradition, Phoenix is able to bring Mia's guiding hand and brilliant mind back to life. Mia points out the clue that catches White in his lies.
As Maya's powers grow stronger, Mia is able to stick around more and more often to help Phoenix see things in a new light and think outside of the box. Anytime Phoenix needs her Mia is there, channeled through either Maya or their cousin, Pearl. Mia also appears to protect her sister when plans to finally stop Dahlia go awry and to help Phoenix realize the truth of Godot. At the end of the final trial of Trials and Tribulations, Mia reassures Phoenix that justice has been served, that he has brought Diego peace the only way he could, and that his defense in the case was as good as any lawyer could hope to produce.
Point in Canon: Post Case 3-5 (Bridge to the Turnabout)/after Trials and Tribulations
Character Personality: The Mia we see most often is calm, cool, and collected. Though she may have been nervous when she was the mentee, by the time she is Phoenix's mentor she has both a rational and capable legal mind and a strong sense of right and justice. She is also very intelligent and, as a lawyer, observant, investigative, and curious. Without pressing to the point of non-response, Mia leaves no stone unturned in her quest to understand people, help them, and find the truth.
Mia guides Phoenix through his first trial without a hitch, constantly giving him just the right amount of encouragement and push to make him a successful lawyer. Rather than giving him answers, she asks the right questions - a talent that some teachers never learn. Though she is never present during the discovery or investigation of clues, she is able to piece it all together during the trial to help Phoenix. Her face and demeanor sometimes express concern during some of Phoenix's trials (things don't always go so well), but she never panics, yells, or sweats. Mia also proves to have a great talent for reading witnesses - she is able to give Phoenix small points and warnings about witnesses as varied as Adrian Andrews and Mrs. Oldbag during his cross-examinations.
This does not, however, mean that Mia is cold or strictly logical. Leaving the Kurain Village demonstrated Mia's commitment to truth and family, two things that never change for her. Though she knew the danger she faced by continuing to investigate Redd White, Mia refused to let that cloud her judgment - she was not going to do anything less than find all the evidence she needed to get to the truth. She discovered the connection between White and her mother, but continued investigating to come up with the list of people White was blackmailing. And though we barely see Mia interacting with her sister, Mia makes clear she holds her sister in great esteem, believes in Maya's strength, and would never do anything to hurt her... while also being a good big sister and leaving her more or less in the care of someone she knows will look out for Maya.
Mia walks a delicate balance between confidence in herself and faith in others. She knows perfectly well how competent she is, but always maintains a belief in the strength of her sister, the ability of Phoenix, and the devotion of others. She knows that despite her individual capacity, law - and life - relies upon the strength of those around you as well. Edgeworth, Franziska, Phoenix, Maya, Gumshoe, Diego - Mia understands that all must work together to find the truth and salvation. This is part of what makes Mia such a good mentor.
She has a great capacity for love, trust, and understanding, and seeks to establish bonds with others while maintaining her view of right and wrong. While she can be and often is very sympathetic, she will not bow down to anyone, nor will she compromise herself or her values in order to protect or befriend someone. She has a knack for rubbing people just the right way - and her figure certainly doesn’t hurt. But as a player at the top of her game, Mia has very few who stand as her equal, and so she is always the older sister or the mentor - someone to look up to, someone who knows more about those around her than others know about her.
Though Mia often appears when the chips are down and Phoenix needs a new pair of eyes to survey the scene, Mia also comes when Phoenix needs her - not just because he doesn't know what to do, but because he simply needs her comforting presence and someone who believes in him. But she never lies to Phoenix. She lets him know when it looks bad, but always reminds him that there is a way out... because if someone is lying, there must be a contradiction.
