Hallow's eve childhood memories

Oct 27, 2008 09:54

One look outside the window and I see the neighborhood's dotted with them large orange squashes, most of 'em with their own personalities. It's gettin' a mite chilly out there, too. Hallow's eve is just 'round the corner... And if I were five years old, I'd be all up in a feeze right about now, but I'm too old for trick-or-treating. It's always ( Read more... )

Hrmph. Halloween. I could do without children dressed as whatever the current pop culture thing is throwing eggs at my house. Blasted children and their merriment.

Passin' out treats is a highly effective way of avoidin' the trickeries.

Of course I've attempted it in the past, Mr. Marshall. All that resulted in was an increase in the egging.

So what did you and your brother dress up as, for Halloween?

Heck, all sorts of things! We liked to match each other whenever possible. One year our ma dressed us as Indians. Another, we were construction workers. When we got a lil' older we were cops at my suggestion.

Um, Mr. Marshall? You're not going to carve a pumpkin with the same knife you shave with, are you? I don't think that would be too sanitary...

Would dullen the blade, too. That's why I'll be usin' an old-fashioned kitchen knife.

You gonna join in, bambina?

Oh yes. Thank you for the reminder, Marshall. I'd nearly forgotten. I suppose I must go buy candy.

Nearly forgot? There's signs of the holiday everywhere you turn 'round this city.

Not in my neighborhood. Mostly families without children, and the limitations on decorating in this community ensure that few people decorate for this holiday at least. Although by this time there are pumpkins popping up on people's front stoops that I just paid no mind to.

We do get children in the neighborhood, but most of them are bussed from other parts of the city.

Hold up there. You saw pumpkins in front yards and unless you don't have a calender, you knew it was October and you STILL almost forgot about Halloween?

Even PAYNE knew Halloween was comin', man. And I ain't even counting all of the displays in stores and ads everywhere!

I suppose that another reason why I haven't gotten tired of dressing up at Halloween is that by the time Ema started to go out Trick-or-Treating I was already past the acceptable age to collect candy for myself. Yet, dressing up was a way to bond on that day as I escorted her around.

I'll pick up a pumpkin or two from Green Greens after I come back from meeting with my client, if you'd like. And I've just received an e-mail from the costume shop saying that the hat for your costume came in.
