I was in Treats today (a coffee shop at York) when I heard some rap/techno song that I've heard every time an ad for Hitch (the new Will Smith movie) came on TV. You all know the song: It repeats the same shrill, obnoxious, unoriginal riff for 6 minutes, and occasionally someone raps over it, but it's barely audible. It's not even rap that I hate. I don't like rap, but at least sometimes it has a message, or even a kick-ass bassline. Not this song. It's just terribly over-produced, annoying drivel. I thought it was a joke when I first heard it 'cause I can't imagine people actually listening to that song.
But alas, people do listen to it. Like last year I would see these kids in rez listening to some techno song while sitting on their computer with 15 MSN conversations going on while watching porn or something. Why would they actually listen to techno? Are they dancing to it? No. Either listen to actual music or don't listen to anything at all.
It just drives me fucking nuts when I hear techno music outside of a dance club. Don't get me wrong, I don't like hearing techno in a dance club either, but at least it serves a purpose; you can dance to it. You sure as hell can't listen to it. It's boring, repetitive, obnoxious and just downright lame. There's rarely lyrics, and when there are it's usually the same four words that have no meaning repeated a thousand times using different filters so it sounds all computery. I'm sure it was original when someone invented the idea of speeding up a Vocoder really really fast, but it isn't now. Come to think of it, the first time I heard that effect was in that Busy Child song by The Crystal Method (I really wish I didn't know the name of the song) and it annoyed the hell out of me then. Is anyone with me on this?
I also hate it when a perfectly good song is ruined by some jerk being arrogant enough to make some techno remix of it and the band actually lets them release it. Like the Manics best of compilation has a whole disc of techno remixes. So essentially, all they did was take one 2 second sample of some 6 minute epic song and play with dials on some MIDI program until they've finished making a bland, uninteresting 10 minute abortion of what was once a good song. Luckily, I've never met anyone who actually listens to the remixes, but the fact that they're even released pisses me off.
*sigh* Well, I'm glad I got that out.
